Slp-Stch-Flip-Jops
Cosy slip-stitch mittens with a flip-top.

The stitch pattern immitates a checks using slipped stitches which makes these mitts very soft and warm. The Flip-Tops enable you to easily grab your keys or look for change without having to take off the mitts in the cold! Instructions:
Cuff - both mitts:
Using 3mm (US size 2.5) needles CO 48(56) sts in MC. Divide sts evenly between 4 needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist. [K1, p1] for the next 5 rnds. Change to CC: [K1, p1] for the next 3 rnds. Change to MC: [K1, p1] for the next 4 rnds. Next rnd change to 3.5mm needles: Knit.
Hand - right mitt:
Rnd 1: K4, m1, k1, m1, k to end of rnd. Rnd 2: P4, m1, p3, m1, p to end of rnd. Work next 10 rnds in pattern st starting with rnd 3. Rnd 13(MC): K4, m1, k5, m1, k to end of rnd. Rnd 14(MC): P4, m1, p7, m1, p to end of rnd. Work next 10 rnds in pattern st starting with rnd 3. Rnd 25(MC): K4, m1, k9, m1, k to end of rnd. Rnd 26(MC): P4, m1, p11, m1, p to end of rnd. Work next 10 rnds in pattern st starting with rnd 3. Rnd 37(MC): K4, put 13 sts on a holder, cast on 3 sts, k to end of rnd. 50(58) sts You should now have 14(16) sts on the first needle and 12(14) sts on each of the other three needles. Work in pattern st for 23 (or a multiple of 4 -1) rnds until you are at the beginning of your fingers, starting with rnd 2 of pattern st.

Fingers - right mitt (MC):
Put all sts except the first 8(9) sts of needle 1 and the last 6(7) sts of needle 4 on a stitch holder. First finger: K sts from needle 1, CO 2(4), k sts from needle 4. Divide those 16(20) sts evenly on 3 needles. Next 6(7) rnds: K. Next 3(4) rnds: [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Bind off. Break yarn. Second finger: Return the next 6(7) sts on each side of the first finger on the needles. Starting with the palm facing: K6(7), CO 2(3), k6(7), k2(3) sts out of the 2(4) cast on sts on the base of the first finger. Divide those 16(20) sts evenly on 3 needles. Next 6(7) rnds: K. Next 3(4) rnds: [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Bind off. Break yarn. Third finger: Return the next 6(7) sts on each side of the second finger on the needles. Starting with the palm facing: K6(7), CO 2(3), k6(7), k2(3) sts out of the 2(3) cast on sts on the base of the second finger. Divide those 16(20) sts evenly on 3 needles. Next 6(7) rnds: K. Next 3(4) rnds: [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Bind off. Break yarn. Fourth finger: Return the last 12(14) sts on the needles. K12(14), k2(3) out of the 2(3) cast on sts on the base of the third finger. Divide those 14(17) sts evenly on 3 needles. Next 6(7) rnds: K. #Only size L: [K1, p1] 8 times, k2tog.# Both sizes: Next 3 rnds: [P1, k1] to end of rnd. Bind off. Break yarn.
Thumb - both mitts:
Return the 13 held sts for the thumb on the needles. Join MC, knit those 13 sts, pick up and knit 9(11) sts around the thumb opening. Divide those 22(24) sts evenly on 3 needles. Continue in pattern st starting with rnd 2 for 10 pattern repeats or until desired length is reached. End with rnd 4 of the pattern st. Next rnd(MC): K2tog to end of rnd. 11(12) sts Next rnd(MC): P2tog 5 times, p1(p2tog). 6 sts Break yarn and thread through the remaining 6 sts pulling tight.
Flip-top - both mitts:
With the back of the mitt facing you, use the first thumb st for your orientation. Right mitt: count 1 st to the right. Left mitt: count 24(28) sts to the left. From this st count 4 rnds upwards and insert a long tail of MC-yarn between this purl st and its slipped neighbour to the right. Insert the crochet hook into the slipped st 23(27) sts to the right from where you inserted the yarn. Catch the yarn on the inside and pull up a loop, creating thus a stitch. Be sure there is enough length of yarn left inside to weave in later. Repeat picking up sts like this moving 1 st to the left each time until you have picked up 23(27) sts. The last picked up st should be

next to where the yarn was inserted. Pull on this inserted yarn tail from the outside to eliminate any excess yarn loops on the inside. Cable cast on 25(29) sts. Join for working in the rnd and divide the 48(56)sts evenly on 4 needles. Continue in pattern st starting with rnd 2 for 13 pattern repeats or until 4cm/1.5" before desired length is reached, ending with rnd 4 of pattern st. Next rnd(MC): [K1, ssk, k to end of needle, k to 3 before end of needle, k2tog, k1] twice. Next rnd(MC): [P1, p2tog, p to end of needle, p to 3 before end of needle, p2tog, p1] twice. Next rnd(CC): [Sl1, k1] to end of rnd. Next rnd(CC): [Sl1, p1] to end of rnd. Repeat the last 4 rnds 4(5) times. 8 sts Next rnd(MC): K2tog 5 times. 3 sts Using those 3 sts work an i-cord until 4cm/1.5" long. How to make an i-cord: With all 3 sts on one needle: k3. Without turning your work slide the worked sts from the left to the right tip of the needle and k3 again holding the working yarn tightly. Repeat.
Hand - left mitt:
Rnd 1(MC): K17(21), m1, k1, m1, k to end of rnd. Rnd 2(MC): P17(21), m1, p3, m1, p to end of rnd. Work next 10 rnds in pattern st starting with rnd 3.

Rnd 25(MC): K17(21), m1, k9, m1, k to end of rnd. Rnd 26(MC): P17(21), m1, p11, m1, p to end of rnd. Work next 10 rnds in pattern st starting with rnd 3. Rnd 37(MC): K18(22), put 13 sts on a holder, CO 3 sts, k to end of rnd. 50(58) sts You should now have 14(16) sts on the second needle and 12(14) sts on each of the other three needles. Starting with rnd 2 work in pattern st for 23 (or a multiple of 4 -1) rnds until you are at the beginning of your fingers.
Fingers - left mitt (MC):
K16(21), put the all sts on a stitch holder except the last 8(9) sts of needle 2 and the first 6(7) sts of needle 3. First finger: With palm facing k14(16), CO 2(4). Starting on the palm side: K6(7), k2(3) sts out of the 2(4) cast on sts on the base of the first finger, k6(7), CO 2(3). Divide those 16(20) sts evenly on 3 needles. Next 6(7) rnds: K. Next 3(4) rnds: [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Bind off. Break yarn. Third finger: Return the next 6(7) sts on each side of the second finger on the needles.
