Stripe Pattern:
Rows 1-2: With Color B, knit across round. Rows 3-4: With Color A, knit across round. (Color A will be brim color, Color B will be alternate color.)
Begin Pattern:
(If using Stripe pattern, begin with Color A, but do not begin striping until body.) CO 60 (68, 76, 80, 84, 88) stitches using 1 24" circular needle. Do not join in the round, you will work back and forth for the brim.
Brim:
Row 1-2: \*K2, P2; repeat from \* across row. Row 3: K2, P1, BO3, P2, \*K2, P2; repeat from \*across row. Row 4: \*K2, P2; repeat from \* across to 3 stitches from end of row, CO 3, K1, P2. Row 5: \*K2, P2; repeat from \* across row. Row 6: BO6, P2, \*K2, P2; repeat from \* across row. Row 7: BO6, \*P2, K2; repeat from \* across row. Continue to "Body" section below.
Body:
Transfer stitches to 1 16" circular needle. (If using stripe pattern, begin pattern, beginning with Color B and work stripe pattern through the rest of pattern including the decrease rounds. If you have problems changing colors when joining in the round, tie a square knot with Color B onto Color A's yarn and begin knitting with Color B as shown in photo below.)

Begin by joining stitches in the round. (Note: if you are knitting a baby hat and find it too hard to knit with the circular needle you can switch to the DPNs if you would like.) Body Rounds 2 to End of Body: Continue knitting each round until piece measures 3.75(4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 5.75) inches long including the brim. If using stripe pattern, change colors throughout the body as described by pattern (to change color, simply twist the two yarns together before changing color). Try to end on row 2 or 4 of stripe pattern if you can so that you start a new color when beginning the decreaserounds. Continue to decrease rounds below.
DECREASES:
Decrease Round 1: Knit all stitches across round, decreasing 0(2, 4, 2, 0, 4) sts evenly across the round to make 48(54, 60, 66, 72, 72) sts total. Decrease Round 2: \*K4, K2tog; repeat from \* across. Decrease Rounds 3, 5, 7, and 9: Knit. Decrease Round 4: \*K3, K2tog; repeat from \* across. Decrease Round 6: \*K2, K2tog; repeat from \* across. Decrease Round 8: \*K1, K2tog; repeat from \* across. Decrease Round 10: \*K2tog; repeat from \* across. Cut yarn and using a tapestry needle, thread through the remaining stitches and pull together. Weave in all yarn ends.
Flower Detail:
With 4 dpns, C0 9 stitches (3 stitches per needle on 3 needles, plus 1 extra dpn to work with). Join in round. Round 1:\*K2, K1fb; repeat from \* across round. 12 stitches total. Round 2" \*K1, K1fb; repeat from \* across round. 18 stitches total. Round 3: \*K2, K1fb; repeat from \* across round. 24 stitches total. Round 4: \*K3, K1fb; repeat from \* across round. 30 stitches total. Begin Flower Petals: (note: you will begin working back and forth for petals) Row 1 (of flower petal): P2tog, K3, P1. Place remaining stitches on stitch holder or waste yarn.

Row 2 (of flower petal): K1, P3, K1 Row 3 (of flower petal): P1, K3, P1 Row 4 (of flower petal): K2tog, P1, K2tog Row 5 (of flower petal): P3tog, cut yarn, pull through to bind off. Weave in yarn ends. Repeat Rows 1-5 of the flower petal 4 more times (for a total of 5 petals), each time picking up 6 stitches from the waste yarn/stitch holder to start each flower petal. When you have finished the flower you may steam block it, if desired. I would recommend it as it keeps the flower petals from folding and curling. To steam block, wet an old sheet, pillowcase, or towel. Ring it out. Pin the piece (in this case, the flower) to the desired dimensions and appearance. Set the iron to a steam setting. Run the iron over (but not on) the flower. Do this for several minutes or until your piece has been blocked to your satisfaction. Note: I used acrylic yarn for my flower. Despite popular belief, acrylic can be blocked. Just make sure when you steam block it, that you do not let the iron touch the fabric (otherwise it will ruin the fabric). I usually try to keep an inch or two distance between the iron and the knit object. Finish by sewing the button onto the side opposite the button hole.

If you would like to use the flower, slip it over the button.
