Roses in the Yard
A Sampler Aran Hat Designed by Judith N. Jackson
Inspiration for the hat was drawn from my backyard with its fences, trellis, rose bushes, honey bees, mossy rocks, and trees. I thought it would be interesting to knit a hat reflecting these elements using different types of cable patterns. The hat uses Twisted Tree, Briar Rose, Honeycomb, Interlocking Lattice, Moss Stitch, and Twisted Cross and Cable (that looks like the vines). Purl 1 row and place markers every 20 sts for dec for crown of hat. 8.) Change back to size 6 - 16" knitting needles and knit 1 row. Then, with next row, begin the dec (Chart J) for the top of the hat. Continue to knit circularly, decreasing every other row using CDD (sl2, k1, p2sso) until 12 sts rem. Change to DPN's when there are not enough sts to fit around the circular needle. 9.) Weave yarn through rem 12 sts, tighten, and weave end in on inside of hat. Make pom pom (or pom pon) and attach to center top through center of hat to inside. 10.) Weave in ends and Block over a round bowl fitting 22 “ circumference. Make Pom Pom (pom pon) as follows: Cut 2 pieces of cardboard half the desired width of the pom pom (pom pon). Place a length of yarn between cardboard pieces. Hold the pieces together and wrap yarn around them. Tie the length of yarn tightly at one edge. Cut the wrapped yarn on the opposite side. Remove cardboard, fluff, and trim. Use ties to attach to center of hat. Weave in ends. References: Editors. Hats - A Knitter's Dozen. XRX Books. Sioux Falls, SD. 2005. p. 82. The Harmony Guides 450 Kniting Stitches. Volume 2.
