Le Weekend Shawlette
This Shawlette is so named because I made it over a weekend, starting late Friday afternoon and completing it on Sunday afternoon! It is knitted on 4.5 mm needles using 4 ply/sockweight yarn - the colour here is my Hippy Chick a rainbow coloured yarn. The lace pattern stitchwork is loosely based on some of the shapes used in Estonian Lacework. It is crescent shaped and sits beautifully on the shoulders or cane be worn as a fichou type collar or scarf. Blocking the finished object is essential to get it to the necessary size. Materials: 100 grams Woolhunters Ewereka Sock (100% Superwash Blue Faced Leicester) 400 metres per 100 gram skein. My garment only actually used 70 grams from the 100 gram skein i.e. approx 280 metres but as individual knitting tension is a unique thing, it is possible that some knitters may use more or less. Any left over yarn could be used to make a pair of matching fingerless gloves. It is possible to make this project in any other 4 ply/fingering/sock yarn providing please be aware that differing types of yarn will not work as far and you may need extra yarn. Please ensure that you purchase sufficient yarn for your project as it is virtually impossible to replicate the colours in handpainted yarns.
NOTIONS
1 pair of 5.5 mm needle, 1 circular 4.5 mm needle of at least 24 inches in length, 1 tapestry needle to darn in any loose ends. TOP TIP: If like me, you hate using circular needles it is possible to knit this garment using longer length straight needles and it is also possible to make a larger garment using larger needles and thicker yarn but you will need to adjust the yarn quantities accordingly.
Tension/Gauge
This is largely unimportant as you garment will be blocked to achieve the necessary size but it should be around 4.5 sts and 4 rows per inch worked in stocking stitch. The finished garment will measure approx 42 inches wingtip to wingtip and a depth of 11 inches at the centre point ONcE BLOCKED.
Abbreviations
k = Knit p = Purl K2 tog = Knit 2 together SK2P = Slip the next 2 sts knitwise, knit the next stitch and pass the 2 slipped stitches over this stich. Ssk = slip the next 2 stitches knitwise onto the right hand needle, insert left hand needle back into the stitches, knit the two together. (2 stitches become one and this makes a left slanting decrease). yo = yarn over needle wyifsllp = with yarn to the front as if to purl slip one stitch purlways Other Abbreviations are given in the Chart provided.
Method:
Using 5.5 mm straight needles and cable cast on method, cast on 355 stitches. The larger needles are only used for casting on and off to give a nice loose edge that will block well. Change to 4.5 mm needles and work Rows 1-16 from Lace Chart. This stitches between the thicker lines on the chart a repeated a total of 22 times, then commence shaping as follows. Row 1: Wyif sl1p, k7, \*SK2P, K13\* rep from \* to \* to last 11 sts, SK2P, K8 Rows, 2, 4 & 6: Sl1 purlways, purl to end Row 3: Wyifsl1p, K6, \*SK2P, k11\* rep from \* to \* to last 10 sts, SK2P, k7 (267 sts remain). Row 5: Decrease a further 24 sts as follows by knitting an SK2P at the cetre of each of the following lace "points" on point nos. 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, 20, 21 & 22 (243 sts remain). Row 7: Wyif sl1p, knit to end. All further rows are now knitted in stocking stitch i.e. 1 row knit, 1 row purl and the short row shapings to give the crescent effect are performed as follows:- Row 1 (RS): Wyif sl1p, K125 TURN work Row 2 (WS): P9 TURN work Row 3: K8, ssk, k3 TURN work Row 4: P11, p2tog, p3 turn work Row 5: Knit to 1 st before last turning point, ssk, k3 turn work Row 6: Purl to 1 st before last turning point, p2tog, p3 turn work Repeat rows 5 and 6 until 185 sts remain on your needle and there is 1 st remaining unworked at each edge. Next Row: Wyif sllp, k to last 2 sts, k2 tog. Cast Off as follows: Change to 5.5 mm needles. P2 tog and slp this stitch back onto your right hand needle, then cast off all sts knitways. Weave in loose ends. Wash garment and whilst still damp block to a size of 42 inches from wingtip to wingtip and a depth of 11 inches in the centre of the garment and pinning out each individual lace point. Allow to dry completely before removing your blocking pins. It is essential that this garment is blocked as described to achieve the best effect of the lace and gain the correct size. For any of you that are unfamiliar with blocking methods, there are some excellent tutorials on www.youtube.com. It may seem a bit brutal if you are not familiar with this technique to stretch a garment in this way but don't worry as the wool is actually very strong! Most of all I hope you enjoy not only making it but wearing it too. There are many other paterns of mine ‘tobe found onmy own website and also www.ravelry.com/people/woolhunter. Remember if you buy any of my yarns, my patterns are always free of charge, simple email when purchase the yarn to advise which patterns you would like and I will email them to you in pdf format. Maximum of 2 patterns per order applies.
