This piece should really be called ,Either Or"! Either hat or cowl. The whole piece is knitted either one way or the other, it's entirely up to you. Personally, I find it to be an unbelievable way of meditative creation, with absolutely no increasing or decreasing to worry about, simply just carry on and on. The number of stitches to cast on is the only part without the ,or"! In my case it was 85 for the orange and lilac and the green was 90 stitches. Cast on 85 or 90 stitches on round knitting needles size 5 or 4.5. Put the needle in the stitch and then turn clockwise twice (or 3 times - in the case of the green hat) small loops or YO (yarn over) and pull through/drag out, and carry on this way until the end then close the circle. Row 2 Take 5 stitches and with the right needle drag them out one after the other (they are very long), put all 5 stitches back onto the left needle and knit them together with the right needle, but leave them on the needle, 1 YO (yarn over) 1 knit-together and leave on the needle, 1 YO knit everything together and slip from the needle. Repeat until the end of the row. Row3 Knit or purl all stitches or knit 5 stitches and purl 5 stitches or the other way round. Row4 Either knit or purl all stitches Another few rows knit-purl-knit - whatever you fancy. Next row as Row 1. The 5 stitches can be knitted together either in front or behind the needle. A row can be knitted in one direction (put the needle in the front loops of the 5 sts), a row in the opposite direction (put the needle from behind - in the back loops of the 5 sts), this can be swapped and changed as you like - either alternate - 5 stitches together in the front loops, yo, 5 tog, yo, 5 tog or - 5 stitches together in the back loops of the 5 sts, yo, 5 tog, yo, 5 tog or choose your own rhythm. The rows in between can be either multi-coloured or the same colour. Once the desired length has been reached cast off all stitches. Next, either crochet a chain thread or use a strong piece of coloured string and pull this through a few centimetres from the edge. The cowl is finished. Should you want it to be a hat just pull the cord and tie an artistic bow. The ends can be prettied up with bobbles, buttons, pearls or simply left as it is.
