Materials:
1) Size 6 US (4mm) circular needle, 47 inches for Mobius or 24 inches for plain cowl (or double points, or long cable for Magic Loop) 2) 198 yards or 50 grams of fingering weight yarn (Noro Shiraito was used on all examples) 3) One stitch marker for versions 1 and 2, two stitch markers for version 3 4)Tapestry needle Version 1 and 3 are both Mobius cowls and require the use of a Mobius cast on. There are several great videos on YouTube to teach you versions of this cast on. My favorite is by Cat Bordhi and can be found here http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVnTda7F2V4 The stitch pattern used is based on Woven Diagonal Herringbone from the 1998 Schoolhouse Press edition of “A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" by Barbara Walker, page 96. Why do version 1? You want a Mobius cowl, which has a lovely twist that makes it a joy to wear, with a reflection of the pattern on the horizontal axis (from shoulder to shoulder as you wear it) that only has three purl rows in the garter border. Otherwise, it's all lovely knit! Why do version 2? You don't want to deal with a Mobius cast on. You don't want a twist. And you only want to do six rounds of purling for the garter edges. Otherwise, it's all lovely knit. Why do version 3? You want a Mobius cowl, which has a lovely twist that makes it a joy to wear, with a reflection of the pattern on the vertical axis (from head to toe as you wear it). Half the cowl is purled, since you are working from the wrong side. The ratio between knit and purl rounds is the same as in stockinette stitch-5o:50.

This version mirrors on the center cast on, producing a cowl where the right and wrong side of the pattern can always be seen. The use of the Mobius gives the fabric a friendly twist that makes this cowl very comfortable to Wear. Using a Mobius cast on, cast on 102 stitches. Place a stitch marker for the beginning of the round. Join to knit in the round. Beginning with row 1 of the Woven Diagonal Herringbone Left Slant pattern, knit the full pattern three times (36 rows of knitting, 18 slipped stitches when counted out from the center cast on). Finish with 6 rows of garter stitch (or 3 ridges) by doing a knit row followed by a purl row three times. (K P K P K P) Bind off all stitches (I used an Icelandic Bind Off). Weave in both ends. Woven Diagonal Herringbone Pattern Left Slant (all versions) Multiple of 6 stitches. All slipped stitches are slipped with yarn in front. Row 1 (and all odd rows): Knit Row 2: (Slip 3, Knit 3) to end of row Row 4: Knit 1, (Slip 3, Knit 3) until 5 stitches remain, Slip 3, Knit 2 Row 6: Knit 2, (Slip 3, Knit 3) until 4 stitches remain, Slip 3, Knit 1 Row 8: (Knit 3, Slip 3) to end of row Row 10: Slip 1, (Knit 3, Slip 3) until 5 stitches remain, Knit 3, Slip 2 Row 12: Slip 2, (Knit 3, Slip 3) until 4 stitches remain, Knit 3, Slip 1

This version mirrors on a vertical (head to toe as you are wearing it) axis. This is done by changing the right side of the fabric halfway through the round. The use of the Mobius gives the fabric a friendly twist that makes this cowl very comfortable to wear. Using a Mobius cast on, cast on 102 stitches. Place a stitch marker for the beginning of the round, and join to knit in the round. Knit the first 102 stitches. Place a marker. Purl the next 102 stitches to the beginning of the round marker. Starting with row TWO of the Woven Diagonal Herringbone Pattern, knit the first 102 stitches to the mid-round marker using the Left Slant pattern. Purl the next 102 stitches to the beginning of the round starting with row TWO of the Purl Side pattern. Knit the full patterns 3 times (for 36 rows of knitting, 18 slipped stitches when counted out from the center cast on), switching from knit to purl at the mid-round marker each time. The last row is a slipped stitch row. Knit 6 rows or 3 ridges of garter stitch. Do this by knitting the first 102 stitches to the mid-round marker. Next purl one complete round, from mid-round marker past the beginning marker, back to the mid-round marker. Now K, P, K, P complete rounds beginning at the mid-round marker. This should leave you at the mid-round maker after a complete purl round. Knit the last 102 stitches back to the beginning marker. Bind off. (I used an Icelandic Bind Off.) Weave in both ends.
