
Running Ponytail Hat >
"Runner, have your ponytail following the rhythm!" This hat is knit mostly flat - back and forth knit and purl. It measures approximately 8" (20 cm) from the Co. (If you want more or less slouch, simply add or remove rows before decreasing).
1/2 skein of Shepherd's Wool Worsted Stonehedge Fiber Mill (229 m/113g)
Notions:

Head circumference:
S: 17"-19"(44-49cm) M: 19"- 22" (50-55cm) L: 22"- 24"(56-60cm)
Gauge:
20 sts on a 4" (10 cm) blocked square. \*\* 25 sts on my unblocked square
Abbreviations used:
CO - cast on st /sts - stitch/stitches K - knit P-purl

k2tog - Knit 2 together kfb - knit in front and back

Set up:
With US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, CO 90 (100, 110) sts and join to work in the round, making sure not to twist this 1st row. Long tail CO is recommended, but you can replace it with your favorite cast on. (Place a marker to mark the beginning of the round.)
Ribbing:
Knit in 1x1 rib for approximately 2" (5cm) from the CO.
Overlapping flap:
A. With US 6 / 4 mm, knit 1 rows B. Knit 2nd row until 14 st from marker, then kfb for those 14 st as follow: oKfb BUT You keep the just knit st on you main needle and you put the supplementary st on a cable needle - it means you separate the regular sts from the increased sts. - Fig. 1 C. Knit 90 (100, 110) sts D. Grab the 14 "back" sts that are on the cable needle (the previous increase) and put them on your main needle - Fig. 2 You now have 104 (114, 124 sts) on your needles. rom the point on, you will work back and forth and NOT in the round. E. Turn work, slip 1 st as it to purl and P 103 (113, 123 st) F. Turn work, slip 1 st and K 103 (113, 123 st) Knit and purl back and forth like the last 2 rows for 4"(10 cm) from the C0 or more if you want your hat to be more slouchy.
Start decreasing the flap:
1. On right side: slip 1st st, k1, k2tog, knit to the last 4 sts, ssk, k2 You now have 102 (112, 122 sts) 2. Turn and purl as usual - don't forget to slip the first st. 3. Turn and knit as usual - - don't forget to slip the first st. 4. Turn and purl as usual - slip first st.
Crown Shaping:
5. On right side: slip 1st st, k1, k2tog, K2; [k2tog, k8] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last 6 sts: k2, ssk, k2 - You now have 90 (100, 110 st) 6. Turn and purl - slip first st. 7. Turn. Slip 1st st, k4, [k2tog, k7] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last st. 8. Turn and purl 9. Turn. Slip 1st st, k4, [k2tog, k6] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last st. 10. Slip 1st st, k1, k2tog, k1 [k2tog, k5] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last 5 sts: k1, ssk, k2 11. Turn and purl 12. Turn. Slip 1st st, k3, [k2tog, k4] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last st. 13. Turn and pur 14. Turn. Slip 1st st, k3, [k2tog, k3] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last st. 15. Turn, slip 1st st, k1, k2tog, [k2tog, k2] 9 (10, 11) times, knit to the last 4 sts, ssk, k2 16. Turn. Slip 1st st and pur 17. Join back in the round: overlap the fist 3 st and last 3 stitches - use the cable needle and slip 3 sts- and work K2tog with alternate positions. - Fig. 3

Knit in the round:
18. Slip 1st st, K2 [k2tog, k1] 9 (10, 11) times, k3. 19. Slip 1st st, K. 20. Slip 1st st, K2 [k2tog] 9 (10, 11) times, k3. 21. k2tog for the last row.
Finishing:
Break yarn (leaving about 8"'/20cm long tail) and draw through remaining stitches, pulling tightly. Optional tassel is attached to top-center of crown after knitting has been completed. Start by the crochet chain the length you prefer and pass it through the tassel before you close it. Attach to the remaining yarn inside the hat.

Block over a balloon (inflate according to your head measurements. Have a nice run with rhythm!
