worsted weight wool yarn 2ozs is more then enough for all sizes Size 7 needles or size to obtain the gauge of 5spi Provisional cast on Knitting 3 needle knitting (similar to 3 needle bind off)
Abbreviations:
K- Knit Kfab- Knit front and back Directions to knit doubler: Cast on using the provisional cast on method 16(20, 24, 24, 30). Row 1- K3 P10(14, 18, 18, 24) k3 Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have a rectangle measuring 6(7, 8, 9, 10) inches. At this point you will be increasing the width so you'll have more covage for the bum. Row 1- K2 kfab until 3 stitches before the end kfab k2 Row 2- Knit across Repeat the increasing rows 1(2, 3, 3, 3) times. You should now have 20(26, 34, 34, 38) stitches on your needles. Continue the odd shaped retangle until from cast on edge it measures 11 (12, 14, 15, 17) inches. It looks like this.

I realize the different longie patterns have different rises within the same size. If you need to customize this what you need to do is take your desired rise and minus your waistband. For example I like an 18 inch total rise in my medium longies with a 2 inch waistband. So 2 plus 2 for both the front and back waistband is 4 inches. I want a total 18 inch rise so I minus the 4 because the doubler is added in underneath the waistband. What I'm left with is 14 inches and that is the doubler's length. The bum increases are totally optional, they just leave a smoother finish when the longies are actually being worn. If you want them too you start them when your 1 inch past half the desired length of the doubler. Set the finished doubler aside with the stitches live and knit the waistband of your longies in any fashion you want. When you finish the waistband bring back the doubler. Knit ONE round of the body. Do whatever you need to do in that ONE round. Increases for the hips, change to your colorway for the body, upsize your needles, whatever it is, do it all. Do whatever you need to including finding your center front and center back and marking them. On your second body round you will be attaching the doubler to the in progress longies. If your end of round is also your center back, you'll need to line up the center back of the doubler with it. As you line it up it is very important that the purl side is DowN on the doubler and what you see is the knit side. Even with edging the edges tend to roll and you want them to roll towards the baby's legs. They hug the legs and that cuts down on bulk. Slip 10(13, 17, 17, 19) stitches onto another DPN or stitch holder s0 you can access the middle left stitches.

Take the first stitch of the doubler and slip it knitwise onto the left hand needle of the in progress longies. What you need to be looking at is a doubler stitch in front of a longie stitch so when the two are knit together the doubler stitch falls behind the longie stitch and you are left with a smooth transition from waistband to body.

Knit the doubler stitch and the longie stitch together. Repeat until no more doubler stitches are left. Knit around until you are 8(10, 12, 12, 15) stitches from your center front marking. Unraval the waste yarn used in the Provisional cast on to expose the live stitches. Since the provisional cast on leaves every other stitch twisted to you'll need to untwist the stitches as you go.

Take the first stitch of the doubler and slip it knitwise onto the left hand needle of the in progress longies. Knit the doubler stitch and the longie stitch together. Repeat until no more doubler stitches are left. If your center back is also your end of round knit around until you are 10(13, 17, 17, 19) stitches from the center back.Take the first stitch of the doubler and slip it knitwise onto the left hand needle of the in progress longies. Knit the doubler stitch and the longie stitch together. Repeat until no more doubler stitches are left. If a hip is your end of round just knit around until you reach the places where the doubler attach and work the back as you would the front.

What you have looks very much like a Sumo Wrestler's loinclotr. The stitches of the body ought to still be live so the rest of the longies are knit as directed in your pattern. You are free to do with this pattern as you wish. All I ask if you do add it into another pattern please give me credit.
