Bulky Weight Longies

By Janelle Wood This pattern was designed to be used as a nighttime diaper cover. The thickness of the wool makes it more waterproof than worsted weight. If you wanted to make it even more water tight, try knitting them in garter Stitch. A huge incentive this pattern offers is that it is a quick knit. If your little one sizes up before you are ready, these longies knit up in almost no time. Gauge: 7 sts/ 2 inches stockinette stitch Sizing and waist measurements: NB; 16 inches, (Small; 18 inches, Medium; 20 inches, Large; 22 inches) Materials: US 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs (for making I-cord) Size US 9 (5.5 mm) 16 inch circular needles Size US 9 (5.5 mm) DPNs, 40 inch circular needle, or 2 long circular needles for working legs Super Bulky Weight Wool yarn, about 100 (120, 160, 200) yards Waste yarn for holding live sts at the crotch Stitch markers Rowcounter Instructions: Begin project by making an I-cord. 34(36, 38,40) inches in length. You could also make a crochet chain, it works just as well in such thick yarn. Using long tail cast on method and size 9 needles, cast on 56(64, 70,78) sts. Place marker to indicate ginning of round (this will be center back of the pants). Join, being careful not to twist stitches Begin knitting in K2 P2 ribbing. (For the medium size, I had to K2 P2 to the last 2 sts, then K1 P1). Work ribbing for 1 inch. Next Round (eyelets for drawstring): K2, YO, P2tog. Repeat around (for size medium, skip the last 2 sts) Work 1 more inch of K2 P2 Ribbing. K one round. On the next round, K 14 (16, 18, 20) sts, wrap and turn, P 28 (32, 36, 40) sts, (you will pass beginning of round marker), w&t. Resume working in the round, picking up both wrapped sts when you knit past them. Continue knitting every round, working in a short row every 1(1.5, 2, 2.5) inches Knit in this manner until pants measure 6 (7, 8, 9) inches from cast on edge, measuring from the front of the pants (not the short row side). Feel free to add another inch if you want to accommodate a thick, nighttime diaper. I use 2 diapers for overnight, so this adds a lot of bulk. Divide legs For working 2 at a time: K to 1 st before end of round marker and place the next 2 sts on waste yarn or a stitch holder. Beginning with a new strand of yarn, Knit 26 (30, 33, 37) sts onto one long circular or 2 long circular needles, place next 2 live sts onto waste yarn, Knit 26 (30, 33, 37) with the strand of yarn left before the live sts were put onto waste yarn. Divide evenly and continue working in stockinette stitch, working legs 2 at a time. For working legs one at a time on DPNs: Knit 13 (15, 16, 18) sts onto one DPN. Place next 30 (34, 37, 38) sts onto waste yarn, then the last 13 (15, 17, 19) sts onto DPNs. Divide evenly and begin working in the round. Knit every round until legs measure 4 (5, 7, 9) inches from beginning of legs. Children's leg lengths vary, so if you know the child's measurements you are knitting for, make them to fit. Finish by working 1 inch of seed or garter stitch. You could also continue working in stockinette stitch for a rolled cuff. Bind off loosely. I used a size 11 needle to bind off. If you are working the legs one at a time, make sure to leave 2 sts on each side of the waste yarn for the crotch (the first two and last 2) and pick up remaining 26(30, 33, 37) live sts with DPNs. Divide and work the same as the first leg.
Finishing:
Pick up 1 st from the inside of the right leg, k 2 sts from one side of the waste yarn onto the needle. Pick up 2 sts from the inside of the left leg, K 2 sts from waste yarn onto needle, pick up 1 st from the inside of the right leg. \*8 sts total. Divide in half. The first and last st of each side will be the stitches you picked up. Graft live sts together using kitchener stitch. Weave the drawstring through the eyelets on the waistband, Weave in all ends, wash and lanolize for use with cloth diapers.
