Chunky Chullo Knitting Pattern: A Quick, Colorful, Snugly Hat with Optional Crochet Edging and Pompom

Chunky Chullo

A warm, snugly hat that works up quickly with enough colourwork to keep it interesting but still easy. Worked in the round using DPNs or the magic loop method, it has an optional crochet edging and a cute pompom on top. Size - 22"- 23"head. 13 sts / 4" Needles - 6mm DPNS or long circular needle. 6mm crochet hook Yarn - Garnstudio Drops Ice (Or a bulky yarn with a band gauge of 14st = 4". I find with stranded knitting everything's a bit looser so my gauge worked out as 13st = 4". ) CO 4. Arrange needles for knitting in the round. Row 1 - KFB around. 8 stitches Row 2 - KFB around. 16 stitches Row 3 - \*K1, KFB\* Repeat from \* to \* a further 7 times. 24 stitches Row 4 - \*K1, KFB\* Repeat from \* to \* a further 11 times. 36 stitches Row 5-K Row 6 - \*K1, KFB\* Repeat from \* to \* a further 17 times. 54 stitches Row 7-K Row 8 - \*K2, KFB\* Repeat from \* to \* a further 17 times. 72 stitches @ Sarah Springett Hill 2010. All Rights Reserved Row9-K vs in charted pattern. The chart is 12 stitches wide, you simply repeat it 6 times each rov Now is the time to try your hat on! If it doesn't reach far enough down, or if you don't want to do the crochet edging, then knit 2 or 3 more rows in CC3. Using MC B0 7, place 21 sts on spare needle, BO 16, place 21sts on spare needle, B0 7. (This row requires some jiggery pokery with the yarn. It may be easier for you to break the working yarn after each bound off section and weave in the ends later. )

Earflaps

Place the row 21 stitches onto one DPN/one end of the circular needle. Work each flap back and forth as written in chart. Knit an icord with the remaining 3 stitches for 30 rows. Break yarn, pull end through live stitches and pull tight. Cut 12 6-inch lengths of CC2, use crochet hook to pull 5 lengths through end of each icord. Use remaining 2 pieces to tie off each tassel. Trim ends. Optional - edge the bottom of the hat using 1 row of single crochet. Weave in ends. Make a pompom/tassel for the top and attach.
