GO PACK GO! Hat

This hat is an essential item for any Green Bay Packers fan! Made with warm but economical (and machine-washable) Wool-Ease, this hat will keep your ears toasty at Lambeau and makes an excellent gift for the Packer backer in your life. Familiarity with reading color charts is required for this pattern. Needles: US 7 and US 8 DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge and next size up) Brand Wool-Ease - 1 skein Gold (MC), 1 skein Forest Green Heather (CC) 11 rows over 2 inches in k1p1 rib on the smaller needles (knit in the round)

Directions
Using the cable cast-on, CO 88 sts in MC. (22 sts per needle over four needles) PM and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Brim [K1, P1] around until you have about 2" of ribbing. Body of hat Switch to larger needles and k around once. Join CC yarn and begin working the lettering chart (found at the end of the pattern), starting at stitch 1. When you reach stitch 44, PM and complete row 1 of the color chart again. You will work two repeats of the chart per round. When you have completed the chart, switch to smaller needles. Cut CC, leaving a tail for weaving in ends. Continue working in the round in MC, removing the marker that you placed when working the chart, until hat measures 7 inches from CO edge - this will probably take only another round or two. (For a larger, slouchier hat, work an extra few inches.) Begin working the crown decreases: 1. [K9, K2tog] to the end of the round. 2. K around. 3. [K8, K2tog] to the end of the round. 4. K around. 5. [K7, K2tog] to the end of the round 6. K around. 7. [K6, K2tog] to the end of the round. 8. K around. 9. [K5, K2tog] to the end of the round. 10. K around. 11. [K4, K2tog] to the end of the round. 12. K around. 13. [K3, K2tog] to the end of the round. 14. K around. 15. [K2, K2tog] to the end of the round. 16. K around. 17. [K1, K2tog] to the end of the round. 18. K around. 19. [K2tog] to the end of the round. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail yarn through the remaining live sts and cinch them closed.

Alternatives
There are many ways to customize this pattern. Here are a few ideas: Switch which color is MC and which is CC. Omit the pompom, make the pompom multicolored, or use a tassel instead. Work the brim in CC before switching to MC for the body.
