This is an easy pattern for two doors to add to the Gingerbread House. One door goes on the front porch and the other at the end of one of the side walls. The doors are knitted with brown DK weight yarn and 3.25 mm / US size 3 needles. I used Stylecraft Special DK (295 m / 100g) in Walnut. Tension: 12 stitches and 17 rows = 5 cm / 2"2, working in stocking stitch. The finished doors should be 4 cm / 11/2" tall.

Front Door

Using the cable method cast on eight stitches. Work 12 rows in stocking stitch. Next row: SSK, K4, K2tog (6 sts). Next row: Purl. Cast off, working SSK at the start and K2tog at the end of the row.

Side Door

Using the cable method cast on eight stitches. Work 12 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off. The cast on edge is the top of this door. The Doorknobs These are made with a short length of red yarn. I used Stylecraft Special DK in Lipstick. Tie a knot (not too tightly) in the middle of your length of yarn and then thread the two ends of yarn through the door, about 2 cm / 34" up from the bottom of the door and two stitches in from the edge. Make sure there is half a stitch between the two ends. Knot them together twice and trim the ends.

Sewing the Doors to the House

Using ginger thread, sew one door to the front of the porch, making sure that the door is right at the bottom of the porch. Work all round the door stitching through the top layer of the knitting on the porch only.

The other door goes at the end of the side wall furthest from the porch. The top of the door should be 4.5 cm / 134" from the bottom of the house and there should be a gap of less than 1 cm / 1%4" between the door and the corner of the house.

Remember that the cast on edge of this door is the top when sewing it to the house.
