'All Square' Baby Travel Snug/Play Mat

Materials: Approx 880 metres of chunky yarn. 160 metres in each of four colours and 240 metres in white. (Travel Snug/Play Mat featured is knit in 'Sirdar Snuggly' Snowdrops chunky yarn with approx 80 metres of yarn per 50g ball ie 11 balls). One pair of 5.5mm needles. Sizes: Travel Snug measures 45cms wide by 82.5cms long. Play Mat measures 90cms wide by 82.5cms long. Method: Each square is knitted diagonally

Baby Travel Snug:

With 5.5mm needles and using garter stitch (all knit rows) throughout, cast on 2 stitches in any one of the chosen colours. Increase in the first stitch at the beginning of every row until 28 stitches are on the needle. Next, and every following row, knit the first stitch, then knit the next 2 stitches together, then knit to the end of the row. Repeat until two stitches remain, knit two together. Break off yarn and pull through remaining stitch tightly to bind off. Make 24 squares in all, six in each of the four chosen colours. With 5.5mm needles and using garter stitch (all knit rows) throughout, cast on 2 stitches in white. Increase in the first stitch at the beginning of every row until 42 stitches are on the needle. Next, and every following row, knit the first stitch, then knit the next 2 stitches together, then knit to the end of the row. Repeat until two stitches remain, knit two together. Break off yarn and pull through remaining stitch tightly to bind off. Make 4 squares in all in white. Sew all 24 coloured squares together alternating the colours to suit, then fold in half lengthways to form the Travel Snug. Sew together two each of the four white squares to make up the top back and turn down front and attach to each half of the coloured squares, separately. (See photograph as a guide). Fasten the open side and bottom of the Travel Snug with press stud fastenings at intervals. Thread ribbon through the top back and gather when using the Snug to keep baby's head warm.

Play Mat:

Undo the press stud fastenings and open out the Travel Snug. With right side facing, lay flat on the ground with the front flap turned up to match the back. This makes a safe and clean Play Mat on which to lay baby whilst visiting friends and family.
