MATERIALS
Worsted weight wool or wool blend yarn, approximately 50-75 yards (Project shown was completed with 50 yards of Moda Dea Washable Wool [100% wool, 166 yd/152 m per 100 g skein]) Set of size 6 (4mm) and size 8 (5mm) double pointed needles (or circular needles for Magic Loop)
1 Stitch marker
Scrap yarn for provisional cast on
Pattern
Using smaller needles and scrap yarn, C0 48 st provisionally. (Knitty has an excellent tutorial: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfal (05/FEATfall05TT.html) Join in the round, careful not to twist stitches. PM to indicate beginning of round. Work K2, P2 ribbing for 3 12 inches. Switch to size 8 needles. Purl all stitches for 2 rows. Turn work. You will now stop working in the round and begin knitting back and forth. GAUGE
On size 6 needles: 14 st = 2" in K2, P2 rib, unstretched Row 4 - Repeat row 2 14 st = 3.5" in K2, P2 rib, stretched Row 5 - Repeat row 1 (Vertical gauge is not critical) Row 6 - K7, P1, K5, P1, K5, P2, C6F, P2, K5, P1, K5, P1, K7 Repeat rows 1-6 two more times. Repeat rows 1-4. You should be about 3 1%4 inches from ribbed section. If not, continue knitting enough rows to reach 3 14 inches, ending on a RS row.
ABBREVIATIONS
cO - cast on PM - place marker K - knit P- purl St - stitch (es) RS - right side WS - wrong side C6F- cable 6 front (Slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit next 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit sts from cable needle) Rejoin in the round. Purl 2 rows in the round, removing marker on last round. Cut tail, leaving at least 1 yard for grafting. Next, pull the ribbed section up through the center, aligning the cast on edge with the working stitches.

Carefully undo the provisional cast on and place stitches on the set of size 6 needles. The piece should look like the photo on the right. Using a tapestry needle, graft the purl stitches to the K2, P2 ribbing\*.
