Scalloped Lace Baby Cap
Lacy hat for newborns and infants worked from the brim upwards, in the round, and based on the Crest of the Wave pattern from Barbara Walker's First Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The pattern produces a gently curved edge and begins with garter-stitch, so the brim does not roll. Decreases for the crown are integrated into the lace pattern. Lacy, frilly, inexpensive, and fast, this project requires less than half a ball of DK-weight yarn.

Finished size: 14" circumference To fit: newborn-9 months (although 14" is a large baby head) Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cathay (rose), 1/2 ball Needles: 4mm DPNs or long circular needle(s) for magic loop/2 circs (I used Bryspun DPNs, which worked well for me with this slightly slippery yarn.) Gauge: 2.25 inches per 12-stitch repeat of pattern
Instructions:
Cast-on 72 stitches with long-tail cast on. Join into a round. (NOTE: if you wish to use a different cast-on, determine whether the next round should be a knit (round 1) or purl (round 2) round to produce garter stitch, based on your cast-on. For example, the long-tail cast-on makes an initial knit round so the next round should be purled to produce garter stitch and you should start the pattern on round 2.) Starting on round 2 (or round 1, depending on cast-on), work pattern 6 times for each round. Complete pattern through round 12. Work round 1, then repeat rounds 2-12. Work rounds 1-4 again then start the crown decrease rounds (pg 3).
