Beaded Peacock Capelet June 2009

ABOUT THIS SHAWL: I designed this shawl as I went along, so writing this pattern took almost 3 months. I'd been having a real desire to do something peacock-y in terms of color for about year and did some spinning along those lines, but maybe this was what I was really going for allalong? My “feathers"” are quite stylized and if you look at a real peacock feather, the colors aren't accurate at all. But I had fun. and vou could reallv aet creative with bead color placement. iust make sure you buy enough to start with (but hey, beads are cheap). It looks good on almost any body type and accommodates a wide range of body sizes. Colors: You could do it in black yarn with silver beads for evening wear or try a blue or rose color way with complementing beads and turn the “feathers"' into anemones, or skip the beads altogether-a kettle dyed yarn might work well for that. Note that there is no fastening at the neck to hold this shawl closed, you don't need it to wear this comfortably, but you could certainly add a tie threaded through under the collar or a single clasp at the neck. Finishings
Weave in all ends, block (choose your method, http://knitty.com/lssUEwinter02/ FEATdiyknitter.html, pin blocking would work wellfor this, esp.if you use pins to pull out the tips of the feathers at the edge) shape into a circle and lay flat to dry (a disused bed or carpeted room that doesn't get a lot of use works well for this). / Knit Two Togethers Knit two stitches together as if they were a single stitch. \ slip slip Knit: Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position (through the backloops). 3 slip One, / , Pass the slipped Stitch Over: Slip one stitch, knit two stitches together as if they were a single stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the two knit together. O Yarn Overs To make a yarn over, just wrap the yarn around the right-hand needle from back to front counterclockwise before knitting the next stitch. Then just work the next stitch as normal. When you get to the yarn over on the next row, treat it as a regular stitch.
Cable Cast On
Start by placing a slip knot on the left hand needle. Knit on one stitch leaving 2 stitches now on the left hand needle. Now insert the needle between the two stitches, wrap and bring through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand needle. The cable cast on wil also you leave you set up to start with a knit row. How to knit on a bead:
1) Knit stitch to be beaded (it will be on the right hand needle). 2) Impale the bead onto a crochet hook small enough to fit through the hole of your bead. 3) Slip the stitch to be beaded off the needle and onto the crochet hook, with the hook facing you. 4) Pull the loop through the bead, making sure the stitch is still loose enough to knit for the next row (this will take some getting used to). 5) Replace the stitch loop onto the left needle if necessary.
