Esme By Amy Pickard

Esme is a quick to knit hat that gives you two looks in one. Worn on the top of the head, it's a tam. With the cabled brim pulled down over the ears, it becomes a cloche hat. Knit at a tighter tension than recommended, the yarn makes a warm fabric, perfect for the colder weather. Photographs: Amy Pickard Model: Amy Pickard

Tension
16sts and $21\ \mathrm{rows}=10\mathrm{cm}/4$ inches in stocking stitch in the round
Pattern Notes
The yarn used for this pattern is knitted at a tighter tension than given on the ball band. If substituting, choose a yarn with a tension of 14sts and 19 rows to $10\,\mathrm{cm}/4$ inches in stocking stitch. The cabled brim is worked flat until it is the correct length and then cast off. Stitches for the tam are then picked up along the brim's edge and joined to work in the round. The tam is then finished off with a small loop made from i-cord. I highly recommended cabling without a cable needle for this project. For details on how to achieve this, see Grumperina's instructions: www.grumperina.com/cables.htm or visit WendyKnits at media.wendyknits.net/knit/cablelesson.htm I-cord: cast on 3 sts onto a dpn and k the first row. \*Slide the stitches to the opposite end of the needle, so that the working yarn is at the wrong end of the work. With the rs still facing, k the row again, pulling the working yarn firmly around the back so that you can knit with it.\*\* Repeat from \* to \*\* until cord is required length. Cabled Brim Pattern: Row 1: p2, k6, p2 Row 2 and every ws row: k2, p6, k2 Row 3: as row 1 Row 5: p2, C6B, p2 Row 6: as row 2.
Abbreviations
C6B: slip next 3sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle. The Inside Loop list of standard abbreviations can be found at www.theinsideloop.com/abbreviations.html
Instructions
Brim (worked flat): Leaving a yarn tail of approximately $10\mathrm{cm}/4$ inches, cast on 10sts. Work in Cabled Brim Pattern until brim measures 40.5(43, 46, 48.5)cm/16(17, 18, 19)inches from cast on edge, end after row 6 of pattern. Brim shaping: Row 1: p2tog, k6, p2tog. Row 2: k1, p6, k1 Row 3: p1, ssk, k2, k2tog, pl Row 4: kl, p4, k1. Row 5: p1, ssk, k2tog, pl Row 6:k1, p2, k1 Cast off all sts. Starting at the cast on edge, pick up 64(68, 72, 76)sts evenly along side of band from cast on edge to beg of shaping. Join in the round and continue as follows: Round $1\colon\mathbf{k}$ all sts Round 2: $\ast\mathbf{k}2$ , m1, rep from \* to end of round. 96(102, 108, 114)sts Work even without further increasing until work measures $9(10,11.5,12.5)\mathrm{cm}/3.5(4,4^{1}\!/2,\!\$ 5)inches from lower edge of brim. Crown shaping: Place 5 additional markers with 16(17, 18, 19)sts between each marker. Decrease rnd: $^{*}\mathrm{k}$ to within 2 sts of marker, k2tog, sl m., repeat from \* to end of rnd. Continue working decrease rnd until 6sts remain. Remove markers and k2tog around - 3sts remain. I-cord loop: Work i-cord for 4cm/1/zinches. Break yarn, leaving a 15cm/6inch tail. Thread yarn through sts and fasten off. Using tail, sew top of i-cord to base of i-cord, forming a loop.
Finishing
With 10cm/4inch cast on tail, whipstitch cast on edge of brim to underside of brim at the start of the shaping. Using sewing thread or 1ply of yarn, sew on button as shown. Weave in all ends. Dampen tam by soaking in warm water or spritzing with water. Insert large dinner plate of at least $25.5\mathrm{cm}/10$ inches diameter (larger sizes can be blocked up to $28\mathrm{cm}/1$ linches if desired) or create template of 23(25.5, 26.5, $28)c m/9(10,10\%,11)$ inches diameter and pinblock to shape. Allow to dry and then remove plate or un-pin.
