by rebecca wilova FREEFORM LINEN STITCH SPIRAL IN FOUR SIZESFeatured socks were knitted in Socks That Rock lightweight, in sugarplum. Cast on 40/56/64/72 stitches, using a wildly variegated or prone to pooling yarn. Divide your stitches into quadrants of 4. If you're on double pointed needles, use 4 needles, and knit with a fifth. If you're using magic loop or 2 circulars, you'll need to use stitch markers to mark the quadrants.
CUFF
You have the choice of four different cuffs for your sock: picot hem, 1x1 rib, $_{2\times2}$ rib, or a linen ribbed cuff. For allribbed options, knit a total of 16 rows. Instructions for the linen ribbed cuff: Knit two rows plain.

LEG PATTERN
Row 1: Needle 1: \*K1 sl1 wyif Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 2: Needle 1: \*sl1 wyif k1 Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 3: Needle 1: K Needle 2: \*K1 sl1 wyif Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 4: Needle 1: K Needle 2: \*sl1 wyif K1 Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 5: Needle 1: K Needle 2: K Needle 3: \*K1 sl1 wyif Needle 4: K Row 6: Needle 1: K Needle 2: K Needle 3: \*sl1 wyif K1 Needle 4: K Row 7: Needle 1: K Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: \*K1 sl1 wyif Row 8: Needle 1: K Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: \*sl1 wyif K1 Repeat this 8 row repeat as many times as you like, ending with row8.

HEEL
A linen stitch heel flap is suggested, to be knitted across 20/24/32/36 stitches using the following stitch pattern: Row 1: \*K1 sl1 wyif Row 2: \*sl1 wyif K1 Keep in mind that this type of heel requires more rows than a slip stitch heel does in order to be a square flap. Accordingly, knit 24/28/36/40 rows before the heel turn. Alternatively, you could substitute the heel of your choice.
HEEL TURN AND GUSSET
Perform heel turn as follows: Row 1: slip 1, knit 12/14/18/20 stitches, ssk, k1, turn work Row 2: slip 1, knit 7 stitches, p2tog, p1, turn work Row 3: slip 1, knit to one stitch before the previous row's gap, ssk that stitch and the stitch to the other side of the gap, k1, turn Row 4: slip 1, purl to one stitch before the previous row's gap, p2tog that stitch and the next stitch, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until 14/16/20/22 stitches remain. Pick up 12/16/18/20 stitches on each side of the heel flap. Beginning with the next row, you are again knitting in the round. Maintain gusset decreases on every other round while at the same time knitting the instep pattern until you have 40/56/64/72 stitches again.
INSTEP PATTERN

Row 1: Needle 1: \*K1 sl1 wyif Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 2: Needle 1: \*sl1 wyif k1 Needle 2: K Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 3: Needle 1: K Needle 2: \*K1 sl1 wyif Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 4: Needle 1: K Needle 2: \*sl1 wyif K1 Needle 3: K Needle 4: K Row 5-8: K Repeat this 8 row pattern for the necessary length, ending on row4. TOE Wedge toe. Decrease four stitches every other row until 8 stitches remain on each needle (32 total), then decrease every row until 2 stitches remain on each needle (8 total). Draw closed, or graft tip closed. Cast on for the second sock! You can knit the second exactly the same way as the first, but you can reverse the directions (aka row 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) on the second sock to mirror it, if you choose.
