(crocheted infinity scarf) hdc, ch, sl st, working through the back loop, crocheting in the rounc Finished dimensions: 7.5 X 62 inches (19 x 157 cm) Materials: 450 yards (411 m) bulky yarn, to be held double. The sample was worked in Spirit Trail Fiberworks Vesta, (300yds/250gms), held double (1.5 skeins used). Size P/12.75mm Crochet Hook Yarn needle for working in ends Gauge: Approximately 6.5 sts and 6 rows per 4 in (10cm) in pattern Notes: Substituting. Gauge is not crucial for this project. You can substitute a yarn that has heft similar to the yarn used in the sample, or an equivalent such as three strands of a thinner yarn held together or a much thicker yarn held singly. If using either of those alternatives, work a swatch to evaluate the fabric that results in terms of thickness, coziness, and drape, and adjust your hook size or your yarn if needed. Starting with Foundation Single Crochet. Here's a link to The Purl Bee's photo tutorial for this technique. If you prefer, you can work a foundation chain of 101 sts followed by a row of single crochet, beginning by starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, and then continue with Round2. Working through the horizontal back loop (thbl). A half double crochet (hdc) has two loops at the top (which look like a chain stitch) and on the back side one horizontal “loop" (which is actually a yarnover) which gives another possibility for hook insertion. When the directions say "tbhl" work through that part of the stitch. For an excellent tutorial on the structure of the basic crochet stitches and where to insert the hook, take a look at Annette. Petavy's newsletter and scroll down to the section on hdc.
