Santorini-Inspired Knitting Pattern: Sailing in Santorini Shawl with Laceweight Yarn and Beaded Accents

Sailing in Santorini

This shawl is inspired by the island of Santorini in the Aegean. The island half encircles a volcano, so it has both white and black sand beaches. The water is clear and aquamarine. It's a beautiful island and a great, relaxing spot to vacation in.

Materials:

Yarn: 600-800 yards of yarn laceweight or fingering yarn. I used DyeForYarn's mulberry silk lace. It would look lovely in any silk or silk blend. Needles: Size 5 needles or size that gives you the fabric you like. The design uses two different color beads. You can, of course, use one color or no beads. Model uses size 6 seed beads.

To begin:

of 17 stitches: 3 on each side, 11 for the beginning of the body. To create the garter tal 1.Cast on 4 stitches. 2. Knit one row. 3. Row three is k2, k2tog, reducing to three stitches. 4. Continue kniting all rows until you have 11 garter ridges. 5. Turn and pick up 11 stitches in between the garter tabs, then pick up the 3 loops from the cast on edge. Turn and knit onerow.

Sailing in Santorini Body

The model uses 10 repeats of the body chart before turning and beginning the border/edging. Fewer repeats will make a smaller shawl, more repeats will make a larger shawl. You will need more yarn if you do more repeats. Once you've decided that you have enough repeats, complete three knit rows, ending on a right side row (you willturn and start the edging at the end of the right side row). Repeat rows 7 through 24 of the chart as many times as you like. I recommend 10-15 times depending on how much yarn you have and how large you want the shawl to be.

Edging

At the end of a right side garter row, cast on 21 stitches on the same end of the needle holding the stitches. Knit one WS row, attach the last stitch to the next stitch on the body by k2tog through back of loop. Begin working the edging chart.

Helpful Hints:

· Working k, p3tog, k, remember to wrap yarn to the front or back first, then do the YO. It feels almost like a double yarnover. ·You can weigh your yarn at the beginning, then when you've ended a body repeat later on, weigh again. When you reach about 35% of your yarn (you've used 65%), begin working on the edging.
