A pattern by Thelma Egberts Tweet is a hat that looks like a bird. It's a variation on Twitter, my other bird hat. The basis of these hats is the same. Both hats have a 'beak' formed by a double brim. Both have wing-like earflaps worked in short rowwedges. One difference is that Tweet is worked in allover garter stitch. The bigger difference is that Tweet has no felt eyes, but separately knit eyes. These are placed in eye sockets (buttonholes).

GAUGE
16 sts/# 28 rows = 4" in stockinet stitch. Use needles of suitable size required to obtain this gauge. Depending on your individual tension these might be US size #6/4 mm needles or a size or two bigger if you are a tight knitter or a size or two smaller if you are a loose knitter.
PATTERN NOTES
This hat is knitted from backside up. Back and earflaps are knitted together on straight needles. Earflaps are shaped by knitting sort row wedges. You don't have to knit the wraps. (For longer or shorter earflaps knit more or less wedges than the patternstates.) After completing the earflaps, cast on extra sts for the front of the hat and knit in the round from thereon. The hat is knitted in garter stitch. While knitting back and forth knit all rows. While knitting in the round you will alternate knit and purl rows.
TIP: Jogless join in garter stitch
When you knit garter stitch in the round, you will see a jog where the rounds meet. Here's a trick to avoid those jogs. Place a marker at the beginning of round. Purl one round. Remove marker when you reach it. Now slip one stitch from left hand needle to right hand needle, purlwise with yarn in back. Replace stitch marker. Knit one round, including the stitch you slipped the previous round. Remove marker again, slip one stitch from left to right needle and replace marker. Proceed in this manner, slipping one stitch at the beginning of each round.
Specific stitches:
LLinc: Left-leaning Lifted Increase. Insert your left needle, from front to back, into the top of the stitch two rows below the stitch just knit. Knit into the back of this stitch. RLinc: Right-leaning Lifted Increase. Insert your right needle, from front to back, into the top of the stitch below the first stitch on the left needle. Place this stitch on your left needle, and knit into the back of it. Work row 1 - 13 six times in total, so0 each earflap is formed with three wedges. Knit 2 more rows. Now turn over to 3 dpn's to start working in the round. With RS facing, knit 31 sts on needle 1; knit 27 sts on needle 2; knit 4 sts on needle 3 and C0 19 extra sts. Knit first 4 sts of needle 1 onto needle 3. Place stitch marker. FINISHING
Weave in all ends. Sew felt, crochet or toys eyes on stockinet part Decorate if you like by adding tassels on top and earflaps. Make stiff tassle on top by wrapping thread firmly around three or four pieces of thread or around a fine braid. Note: 'Twitter and Tweet' are sold to raise money for Cambodia Knits.
