GENERALNOTES:
Right Side Rows: k3, work chart repeats, k2 Right side rows not charted are worked plain knit rong Side Rows: k3, purl until 3 stitches remain, k. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: (not charted) are included at rows 8, 13 & 17; with an alternative simpler version. Additional depth may be achieved by repeating rows 143 to 152; changing the single decrease (\) on row 143 to a centered double decrease (A). These rows may be repeated up to four times without additional increases. (The circular version of this shawl - 'The Man from Porlock' will be written up as a separate pattern) Cast on - 11 stitches. This includes 5 stitches, which will become selvedges and 6, which will be increased to make the segments of the shawl. 7 8 repeats 3 12 repeats 1 6 repeats At row 7, the major increases have been done and you will have 8 repeats of the pattern, plus (3 +2) selvedge stitches. Place a marker on the last stitch of the 4rth repeat as you work row 7. Xanadu Simple version:
Work Chart one eight repeats per row. Continue in pattern established until row 132 then work the horseshoe edge as described below. See the 30 row repeat enclosed by the dotted box. By following the established pattern this could actually be worked in as fine a gauge as desired and continued until a multiple of 11 stitches are between the selvedges. Each 30-row repeat adds a column on either side of the pattern
NOTAS SIMPLEVERSION:
At row 8: Establish a ninth panel/repeat. Do this by working a purl 1, yarnover, purl 1 into the marked stitch from row 7. The additional 2 stitches will become the ninth panel (located at position 5, the center panel). Until Further Direction, these 2 stitches (fifth/center panel) are worked in stocking stitch. The first 4 and last 4 panels are worked according to chart One. Row 13: The fifth/center panel is worked as O,(k1, yo, k1) in single stitch, O, k1. You now have six stitches in the fifth panel, which continue to be worked in stocking stitch. ROw 17 & onward: ODD numbered panels/repeats are worked using chart two. EVEN numbered panels/repeats are worked using chart one. note that the ODD numbered panels are fully charted Rows 85 to 132 of chart 2 are on a separate page. If additional depth is needed rows 143 to 152 may be repeated up to four more times without additional increases being needed. A FOURTH version - use the instructions for the Not as Simple version but use chart two for only the central fifth panel - using chart one for the other sixteen panels. A FIFTH version - using the instruction for the Not as Simple version but use chart two for panels 1, 5, and 9.
