Herzerl

For the past few years I have made my niece mittens for Christmas. She paints her hand on a piece of paper with the design being what she wants her new mittens to look like. This year the design was a red heart on pink background. I hope she doesn't mind a few more hearts! The mittens are knit in the round in fairisle technique. Prevent long floats by weaving in the yarn you are not working with every 3 to 4 stitches.
Materials
Lana Grossa Cool Wool (100% virgin merinowool; 160m/50g), 1 red skein (heart colour), 1 pink skein (background colour). The child version took 2ig of both skeins and the adult version 28g heart colour and 32g background colour. 3-mm circular needle or doublepoint needles. yarnneedle.
Size
child age 5-7(adult).
Gauge
34 stitches/36 rows are 10 x 10 cm.
Right hand
Cast on 42(52) stitches with heart colour. Join in the round and start working chart 1 from right to left. After that work chart 2 from right to left. At round 8(12) knit first stitch, then place next 9(13) stitches on holder for the thumb. Cast on 7(9) stitches and continue with the chart. After the last round, cut the yarn. Thread both yarn ends through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in the ends. Continue with the thumb.
Left hand
Exactly the same as the right hand, just work the charts from left to right.
Thumb
Place stitches from the holder back on the needle. Pick up and knit 9(13) stitches at the cast on edge in the colour order of the first half of round 1 of chart 3. Continue working the chart. After the last round, cut the yarn. Thread both yarn ends through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in the ends.
