Abbegale Knitting Pattern: Versatile Scarf Design with Increasing, Decreasing, and Middle Patterns for DK and 4ply Yarns

Abbegale is quite versatile and can be worked in any yarn weight you wish. I've either made samples or had test knitters, knit samples in DK and 4ply. You can vary the length and shape of the scarf by following either of the increasing or decreasing patterns and also by changing the numbers of repeats of these patterns that you make. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my test knitters on Abbegale Willamercy and Maddy18. They are shy so I'm only allowed to give their Ravelry user names. Both of their scarves are beautiful. Thank you XX DkScarves Yarn: 450m to 550m of DK yarn - You will probably need at least 2 - 100gm skeins to get the yardage Needles: 4.0mm/US 6 needle or 4.5mm/US 7 needle 4ply Scarf Yarn: 330m to 425m of 4ply yarn 1 x 100gm skein Needles: 3.0mm/US 2.5 needle or 3.25mm/US 3 needle All yarns used in the samples for this pattern were from The Knitting Goddess For all versions Notions: Large eyed tapestry needle Gauge: Gauge is not imperative. What is imperative is the drape. You don't want too firm a fabric or the scarf won't sit nicely around you. It is time to make a small swatch and see what you think. I found it all depended on the yarn.

The different versions:

This all depends on the amount of yarn you have and the type of scarf you want. The Increasing pattern ONE gives a long side whilst the Increasing pattern TWO gives a short side. The Middle pattern neither increases nor decreases. The Decreasing pattern ONE gives a long side and the Decreasing pattern TWO gives ashort side.

Pattern illustration

The Brown Silk DK - was made with one long side and one short side (special thanks to my model Katie)...I used 440m of yarn on 4.5mm/US7 needles. 50 repeats of increasing pattern ONE, 10 repeats of Middle pattern and 17 repeats of decreasing pattern TWO. After blocking this scarf measured 228.5 cm/90" long and 43cm/17" at its widest point.

Pattern illustration

The Red Cashmere DK -- was made with two long sides (again special thanks to my models Phil and Katie).....lt used 500m of yarn on 4mm/US6 needles. 34 repeats of increasing pattern ONE, 2 Middle pattern repeats and 34 repeats of decreasing pattern ONE. After a gentle steam pressing through a pressing cloth, this scarf measured 172.5 cm/68" long and 28 cm/11" at its widest point.

The Slate Blue/Grey Merino DK knitted by Willamercy (special thanks to Wila's model) - was made with one long side and one short side....t used 385m of yarn on 4.5mm/US7 needles. 40 repeats of increasing pattern ONE, 10 Middle repeats and 13 repeats of decreasing pattern TWO. After blocking this scarf measured 172.5 cm/68" long and 32 cm/12.5" at its widest point.

The Turquoise and Blues Merino/Tencel 4 ply knitted by Maddy18 (special thanks to Maddy's model) - was made with two long sides...Itused 30m of yarn on 3.25mm/US3 needles. 40 repeats of increasing pattern ONE, 5 Middle pattern repeats and 40 repeats of decreasing pattern ONE. After blocking this scarf measured 205 cm/80.5" long and 26cm/10" at its widest point You can see from allthe different photos that you can make Abbegale as big or as small as you require. In fact Abbegale can be as small as a short scarf or as large as a shawl. All Abbegale's start with the Set-up rows and end with the Finalisingrows. :k and to be certain you have enough yarn, is to weigh your yarn at all the different sectior
