Robin Topped Beret 100g white double knit wool (you won't use all of this) 100g red double knit wool (you won't use all of this) Size 4.5mm & 3.25mm knitting needles small amount of brown & black double knit wool for the robin Tension aprox 5 st's & 6 rows to 1 in (not absolutely vital) C/O 5 st's RW 1 Purl complete row RW 2 knit increasing in every st but the last st (9 st's) RW 3 purl complete row RW 4 knit increasing in every st but the last st (17 st's) RW 5 purl complete row RW 6 knit increasing in every st but the last st (33 st's) RW 7 purl complete row RW 8 knit increasing in every st but the last st (49 st's) RW 9 purl complete row RW 10 k2, inc in next st to end (65 st's) RW's 11 - 13 st st 3 rows (purl 1 row knit next row) RW 14 k3, inc in next st to end (81 st's) RW's 15 - 17 st st 3 rows RW 18 k4 inc next st to end (97 st's) RW's 19 - 21 st st 3 rows RW 22 k5 inc in next st to end (113 st's) RW's 23 - 25 st st 3 rows RW 26 k6 inc in next st to end (129 st's) RW's 27 - 29 st st 3 rows RW 30 k7 inc in next st to end (145 st's) Work 2.5 ins in st st ending on a purl row Next row k7, k2 tog to end (129 st's) Work 2.5 ins in st st ending on a purl row Change to 3.25 needles & work 1.5 ins in rib (k1, p1) Cast off in rib (k1, p1) Sew up seams of beret Robin (bird) Begin at tail end of body - C/O 6 st's in brown wool purl complete row inc knit wise into every st (12 st's) purl complete row inc knit wise into every st (24 st's) beginning with a purl row st st 5 rows inc for head - k9 inc k wise into next 6 st's, k9 (30 st's) continue in st st for 5 rows dec for breast - next row - k9, k2 tog 6 times, k9 (24 st's) purl complete row & mark centre of row with a coloured thread break off brown & join on red for breast & st st 2 rows next row k2 tog to end (12 st's) purl complete row next row k2 tog to end (6 st's) B&T tightly Join row ends leaving a small gap at centre of seam. Gather round c/o st, pull up tightly & fasten off. Turn right side out & stuff but do not close gap in seam. Use black wool for the eyes & break, starting & fastening off wool in stuff at gap in seam. Mark eye positions with pins on either side of the coloured thread leaving 2 clear knitted st's between the pins. Work a short vertical back st for each eye then repeat at same positions. Work beak in same way below the eyes but leave wool loops protruding. Oversew through loops several times to make beak firm. Add a little more stuffing if necessary before closing gap in seam. For robin tail use brown and c/o 4 st's work in st st & inc 1 st at beginning of next & every following row until 8 st's st st 8 rows dec 1 st at beginning of next & every other following row until 4 st's remain cast off with right side of st st outside oversew c/o & cast off edges tog then oversew row ends tog at each side sew c/o & cast off edge of tail to back of robin just below the gathered c/o st of body sew to centre of beret
