K 18 (20), SSK, K1. Turn Next row: Sl 1, P 5, P2 tog, P1. Turn. Row 1: Sl 1, K to 1 st before the gap, SSK, K1. Turn Row 2: Sl 1, P to 1 st before the gap, P2 tog, P1. Turn Repeat rows 1 and 2 til all sts are used up, ending with a K row.
Pick up gusset sts:
Using the needle with the heel stitches on it, pick up and knit each slipped st along the edge of the heel flap. Pick up the thread between the needles, and knit a st into the back of it (this avoids a hole showing up in the gusset corner). Work in pattern across instep stitches (needles 2 and 3). With empty needle pick up the thread between the next two stitches, and knit a st into the back of it, pick up and knit the slipped stitches along this side of the heel flap. Work half the heel stitches onto this needle. You will have picked up approximately 14 (16) stitches along each gusset edge.
