Bird’ s Eye Mitts

By Rebecca Shepler of Dusty Tree Knits
Supplies:
US #10.5, straight single pointed needles Aran weight yarn, approximately 80 yards (sample knit & shown in unidentified stash) WasteYarn Tapestry needle Gauge: 13 sts = 4” You will CO provisionally and then kitchener stitch the ends together, leaving an opening for your thumb, to form a tube. These mitts are knit sideways. This could be knit in any yarn weight, just adjust the stitch count to ensure your rectangle is long enough to cover your hand and wrist. The edging stitch count is 7 sts. Alternately you could purl the main body sts (not the edging) so it is knit in stockinette rather than garter.
Mitt Body:
Provisionally CO 22 sts. (Links are provided at the end of the pattern for online help) The CO will be removed later so that live sts are used to kitchener the two ends together. If the thought of a provisional CO scares you, you could CO as usual and mattress stitch the two ends together to form a seam. The choice is yours, but I hate toseam. Row l:Kl5, PM,Kl, K2tog, yo twice, K2tog, yo twice, K2. Row2: K3,(P1,K2) 2 times, SM,K15. Row3: K15,SM, Kl,K2tog, yo twice,K2tog, K4. Row 4:B0 2 sts,K3,P1,K2,SM, K15. Repeat Rows 1-4 for a total of 8 repeats worked. Your piece should measure approximately 7 %" total. Remove your provisional CO and place your 22 sts on a needle to Kitchener the two ends together. Decide where you would like your thumb hole to be - either mark with a removable marker or remember your stitch count. (I stitched starting at the garter edge until there were 12 sts remaining) When you get to your thumb placement, place 5 stitches from each side (10 total) onto two different pieces of waste yarn, weave your working yarn into the back on one of the sides past the 5 held stitches and then continue Kitchener stitching the remaining stitches closed to the end.
Thumb:
Now you can choose to either pick up the 10 sts + one st on each end using dpns and knit a few rounds and then BO for a knit thumb or working each side separately with one long strand of yarn do a sewn BO to finish off the live sts. Weave in all your ends and block if necessary.
