Bad Hat Mary - Now Cableier: A Knitting Pattern for a Cabled Hat with Variations

Bad Hat Mary - Now Cableier

Pattern illustration

Who doesn't love a hat with cables? Well, I am sure there is someone. But I love cabley hats. This is a variation on Bad Hat Mary. This was knitted in about 5 hours or so.

Bad Hat Mary - Now Cableier

New and Noteworthy:

My gauge is 3 by 4 in 1 inch. Your gauge may differ. I have modified this hat a litle from the non-cabley hat. I used a M1 (Make 1) increase instead of Kf&b increase (knit front and back), and a K2tog (knit 2 together) instead of a ssk (slip slip knit) for the decrease. Also, I made this hat for a friend who head is not nearly as large as mine, so I made it a little shallower.

Abbreviations:

St st. - Stockinette stitch M1 - Make one (increase of one stitch). Take your left needle, and put it under the yarn between the two stitches on the left and right needles from back to front. Knit through the back loop. One stitch increase. Dec - Decrease K2tog - Knit 2 together PSSO - Slip one stitch, then knit the next 2 together, then slip the slipped stitch over Repeat \*\* - This means to repeat the instructions in between the stars. Cables: C3F - Slip 3 stitches to cable needle, knit 3, knit 3 from cable needle C2F - Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle

Gather this:

For a not-so-slouchy hat (pictured) -

1 skein of Berroco Peruvian Quick (l used Dragon). This hat took exactly one skein, with no yarn left over. If you want this to be a slouchier hat, check out the next line. Slouchier hat - Use 2 skeins! Ha-ha made you look. Stitch marker Size 15 DPNs OR 1 16" Size 15 Circular Needle Tapestry needle Crochet hook for dropped stitches (it's always a possibility)

Then do this:

Cast on 43 stitches, place your stitch marker, and then join for the round. If you twist the stitches, you will put a tear in the time space continuum. We don't want that do we? Do a 1x1 rib for 2 inches (k1, p1, repeat to end of round). This is going to leave you with 2 knit stitches on either side of the stitch marker, I know. But trust me, it works for the math. I love math. Now the increases. You are going to do 2 rows of increases. Ready? Increase Round 1 - K1, M1 to end of the round, with your last stitch being a knit stitch. An increase of 42 stitches. )(85 stitches on the needles.) Increase Round 2 - M1 \*K6, M1\*, repeat \*\* to 1 stitch before marker, k1. Increase of 15 stitches, 100 stitches on the needles

Start cabling!

Foundation rounds (3 rounds total) - \*P1, K6, P1, K17\*, repeat \*\* to end of round Cable round 1- \*P1, C3F, P1, K17\*, repeat \*\* to end of round (3 more times) Cable round 2,3, and 4 - P1, K6, P1, K17\*, repeat \*\* to end of round You will continue the above pattern (3 plain rounds, then a twist round, 3 rounds. twist), a total of 3 times for the less slouchy hat (so, 2 more times), 5 times for the more slouchy hat (so, 4 more times) ending on a third plain round.

Take it down now:

If you don't have another skein, do one more round which should leave about 19 stitches on your needles, then thread your tapestry needle, run it through the live stitches, and pull it tight.
