FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Finished scarf measures 18 cm wide x 150 cm long (7 in wide x 59 in long) including edges
NEEDLES
One pair of 3.25 mm (US 3) single point needles One 60 cm long 3.25 mm (US 3) circular needle
ALSO NEEDED
Darning needle for sewing in ends
TENSION
24 sts and 46 1/2 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over lace stitch using 3.25 mm (US 3) needles or size needed to achieve stated tension (measured after blocking and gentle steaming)
ABBREVIATIONS
k - knit p -purl st(s) - stitches(es) RS - right side WS - wrong side tog -together tbl - through back of loop yo - yarn over to make stitch Sl - slip st (when working the edges all sts should be slipped knitwise)
PATTERN NOTES
This lace pattern is worked in rows but on a circular needle because you will be knitting single row stripes of each colour. Only turn the work when instructed otherwise slide the stitches from left to right along the circular needle once the row has been completed When casting off stitches on Row 11 of Shark's Tooth edging do so looser than you would normally. As a guide the stitches on the right needle should be approximately 1cm long before lifting the 1st stitch over the 2nd. Once the required number of stitches has been cast off knit using your normal tension. As the combination of lace holes and garter stitch means that the fabric will spread width ways I recommend using a stretchy cast off such as the Icelandic method.
MAKING THE SHARK'S TOOTH EDGES - MAKE 2 ONE IN YARN A, ONE IN YARN B
\*Using 3.25mm (US 3) single point needles and Yarn A cast on 8 sts and knit 1 row Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, yo, p1, k1 Row 2: K2, yo, k2, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Row 3: Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2, yo, p1, k1 Row 4: K2, yo, k4, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Row 5: Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p4, yo, p1, k1 Row 6: K2, yo, k6, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Row 7: Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p6, yo, p1, k1 Row 8: K2, yo, k8, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Row 9: Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p8, yo, p1, k1 Row 10: K2, yo, k10, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Row 11: Sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p10, yo, p1, k1 Row 12: Cast off 11 sts (see Pattern Note) you should have 1 loop on right needle, k2, (yo, k2tog) twice, k1 Repeat Rows 1 - 12 a further 5 times then cast off. \* Repeat from \* to \* using Yarn B and set both edges aside.
MAKING THE SCARF
Using 3.25 mm (US 3) circular needle and Yarn A cast on 43 sts and knit 2 rows. Turn work then begin pattern as follows; \*Row 1: Using B, (k2tog, yo) to last st, k1. Do not turn work but slide all sts to other end of needle then Using A knit all sts. Turn work\* (Both yarns are at the beginning of therow). Continue working in pattern as instructed above from \* to \* until you have about 2 metres of each colour remaining. Knit 2 rows in Yarn B then cast off using the Icelandic cast off method.
FINISHING & MAKING UP
Block scarf to finished measurements and block each knitted lace edge to 18 cm (7 in) wide. Gently steam all pieces and allow to cool thoroughly before unpinning. Place the edge knitted in Yarn A onto the cast off edge then sew in place, repeat for other edge.
