VESSST is an open front crocheted vest. The vest was designed for the members of El Segundo Slipt Stitchers. Suitable for both men and women, the pattern explores foundation double crochet, post stitches, extended double crochet, simple color work and simple decreases. SIZES (to fit chest measurement)

STITCHES
Ic (Foundation Double Crochet): Video @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCm1mnyRC Step 2 - Yarn over, insert hook in 4th ch from hook, yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).

Step 4 - Yarn over, insert hook in chain of previous foundation stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. Repeat Step 3. Repeat last 2 steps until desired number of Fdc have been made Step 1 - Yarn over (yo) and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches. Step 2 - Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch. Step 3 - Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice. bpdc (Back Post Double Crochet): Step 1 - Yarn over (yo) and insert your hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below, and then from front to back again between the posts of the second and third stitches. Step 2 - Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch. Step 3 - Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice. edc (Extended Double Crochet): Step 1 - Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch or chain, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), Step 2 - Yarn over and draw through 1 loop (1 chain made), Step 3 - [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 2 times—1 edc completed. STITCHES continued Dec: (Decrease) Step 1 - Work an edc in the next stitch without completing the very last step (leave the last two loops on thehook), Step 2 - Work an edc in the next stitch without completing the last step. You should have three loops on thehook Step 3 - Yarn over and draw through all the loops. Decrease made.
Back Ribbing
Using smaller hook and Color A, work 62 (70, 76, 82, 90, 96, 104) fdc. Chain 3, turn. Chain 3 counts as one stitch throughout. Row 1: fpdc in next stitch. Work bpdc, fpdc across changing to Color B in last stitch. 62 (70, 76, 82, 90, 96, 104) stitches including Chain 3.
Back Body
Switch to larger hook and using Color A, Chain 4, edc acros. 62 (70, 76, 82, 90, 96, 104) stitches including Chain 3. Work even to measure 13(13, 13, 15,15, 16,16) inches from bottom, or to preferred length. Break yarn.
Armhole
With right side facing, skip 6(6, 8, 8, 8,10,10) edc and reattach yarn. RS: Chain 4 (counts as one edc here and throughout), edc in each stitch across leaving last 6(6, 8, 8, 8,10,10) edc unworked. WS: Ch 4, Dec edc, edc to last three stitches, dec edc, edc, turn RS: Ch 4, edc across Repeat last 2 Rows 2( 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6) times more. Work even until armhole measures 8 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11) inches or to desired armhole depth.
Shoulder
Chain 4, work 10(10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15) edc. Break yarn and reattach to work 10( 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15) edc for other shoulder. The fdc combined with postworkcreatesa stretchy ribbing along the bottom edge. Ifyouareexperiencedat crochet,you may wish to makethevestwithoutside seamsup to the armholes. Then work eachfront and thebackseparately.
Left Front Ribbing
Using smaller hook and Color A, work 32 (36, 38, 42, 46, 48, 52) fdc. Chain 3, turn. Chain 3 counts as one stitch throughout. Row 1: fpdc in next stitch. Work bpdc, fpdc across changing to Color B in last stitch. 32 (36, 38, 42, 46, 48, 52) stitches including Chain 3. Row 2: Chain 3. Following pattern of row below, work bpdc, fpdc across changing to Color A in last stitch. Row 3: Chain 3. Following pattern of row below, work fpdc, bpdc across changing to Color B in last stitch. Row 4: Chain 3. Following pattern of row below, work bpdc, fpdc across changing to Color A in last stitch.
Front Body
Switch to larger hook and using Color A, Chain 4, edc across. 32 (36, 38, 42, 46, 48, 52) stitches including Chain 3. Work even to measure 13(13, 13, 15,15, 16,16) inches from bottom (or to match back) and ready to work a WS row Break yarn.
Neck and Armhole
WS: Chain 4, Dec edc, edc to last 9 (9, 11, 11, 11, 13, 13) stitches, Dec edc, When working Front Neck & edc. Leave last 6 (6, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10) edc unworked for underarm. Armhole decreases, decrease RS: Chain 4, edc to last 3 stitches, Dec edc, edc. both edges onWS and decrec WS: Chain 4 Dec edc, edc to last 3 stitches, Dec edc, edc. neck edge only on RS. Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times. Repeat last 2 rows with no armhole decreases until 10 (10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15) stitches remain (equal to back shoulder) Work even to match back. Finishing
Using Color A, sew side and shoulder seams. Using Color A, with right side facing and starting at lower right edge of right front, sc evenly along right front edge and neck opening; continue to work sc across back neck and down left front edge. End at lower left front edge. Do notscaroundbottomofvest! Using Color A, with right side facing, sc evenly around each armhole. Weave in all ends. Block using a method appropriate for the yarn used.
Embroidery

Using Color B and simple straight stitches, embroider the letters ESSS. In the sample, the top of each letter is placed across the top of a row, the middle is at the center of the row and the bottom of each letter is at the bottom of the same row. Letters may be placed in any location on the vest and either horizontal or vertical.
