
GAUGE & MATERIALS
20 stitches $=4\mathrm{in}/10\mathrm{cm}$ in 2x2 rib, blocked and gently stretched. 1 skein light worsted wool yarn. Sample knitted in Cascade 200 Heathers color 9459. 1 set Double pointed needles, two circular needles, or longer circular needle for magic loop in size needed to obtain gauge knitting in the round. Sample knitted on US $7/4.5\mathrm{mm}$ Darning needle for finishing.

THE PATTERN
Cast on 48 stitches. Distribute on DPN, two circular needles, or one long needle for magic loop. Join for knitting in the round. Mark beginning of round. $^{*}\mathrm{k}2$ , $\mathrm{p}2^{*}$ around. Continue for 7 inches or until desired length.
CREATE THUMB OPENING
Row 1: k2,p2,pm, inc1,k2,incl, pm, p2 \*k2,p2 (repeat from $^{*}\mathrm{~8~}$ times - 8 stitches remain to be knitted), pm, inc1, k2, inc1, pm, p2, k2, p2. Stitches between markers are considered “flap stitches." Row 2: k2, p2 k4, p2, $^{*}\mathrm{k}2$ , p2 (repeat from $^{*}\mathrm{~8~}$ times), k4, BO remaining 6 stitches VERY loosely. Row3: BO stitches VERY LOOSELY until 4 stitches remain INCLUDING one stitch from Bind Off. Knit remaining 3 stitches. Row 4: Turn work. Slip first stitch as if to purl, P3. Row 5: Turn work. Slip first stitch as if to knit, K3. Row 6: Turn work. Slip first stitch as if to purl, P3. BO 4 remaining stitches, slipping first stitch as if to knit.
FINISHING
Sew these 4 stitches to the flap stitches marked in increase row. Remove markers. Weave in ends. Soak finished mittens in lukewarm water, wring out excess water, and gently stretch from side to side to relax ribing.
