I'm still a beginner, and I will be a beginner for a very long time, because for me, part of the beauty of knitting is that as good as I may get with one thing, one stitch, one pattern, one project, there will always be one more new thing for me to learn, making me a beginner all over again. My Yarn Tale will never end.
What's This Book About
This book is all about being a beginner, standing in a yarn store, holding that beautiful ball of yarn that just captures me in my hand, and asking myself, "Can I make a scarf with this?" and "How can I make the yarn do all the work?" and "How can I get the best snuggle up value out of this ball of yarn?" That's what this book is all about.
My Yarn Tale
On July 15, 2009, I had an absolutely massive heart attack. I was 48 years old. Everyone at the hospital took very good care of me. My family and friends prayed for me. I survived. I changed my life. I recovered. I needed a hobby. I wanted to do something with arts and crafts. I tried drawing, but I couldn't get past stick figures. I remembered doing some crocheting and weaving when I was in the Boy Scouts, so I asked my mom to take me to a yarn shop. It was beautiful. The color. Copyright @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles The softness. The warmth. The kindness. I bought a ball of yarn, a pair of knitting needles, and a beginners knitting book. The ladies in the store recommended that I also try the how-to knitting videos on Www.knittinghelp.com, www.youtube.com, and on Www.planetpurl.com. So, I watched a lot of knitting videos. Then I tried to cast on and knit. What a mess. My knitting was too tight. It was ugly. I was frustrated. But there was still something magical about it, the way Yarn stitched together to construct something out of thread, so I kept on trying. A few months after I started, while I was in one of my LYSs (Local Yarn Shops), the kind lady that owned the shop said, "Try these." She was holding up a pair of 14 inch US 35 straight needles. I said, "You can knit with those? They look like tree branches?" She smiled and said, "of course you can knit with these. Look at this!" She held up a very beautiful shawl, the stitches were all wide open, airy, and light. I remember hearing myself say, "Wow!". I bought the 35s that she was holding and I gave them a try. All I did was the knit stitch. No purls. I let the beautiful yarn do all the work. Wow!! I tried a scarf. It was beautiful. I tried a wrap and an afghan. They were amazing. I tried a hat. oh my!! Then, one day, I stumbled on a pair of 14 inch US 50s (no worries, I didn't really stumble on them). Wow!! Unbelievable!! I thought I loved using 35s, but when I Copyright @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles tried the 50s, I couldn't believe how much I loved them. I couldn't find too many US 35 and US 50 patterns for beginners, so, I bought some yarn and I cast on without knowing what I would end up with. This book is my record, my Yarn Tale, of the projects that have worked out the best so far. The next Section, The Yarn Tales Classroom, gives you every technique that I learned for the projects presented in the following Section called The Yarn Tales Projects. The links are live, so touch or click and they'll take you out to the web. Happy Knitting!! Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles
The Yarn Tales Classroom
The projects in this book use ten different types of stitch and needle work. They are the l) Knit Stitch (Garter Stitch), 2) Chain Knitting,3) Knitting withTwisted Drop Stitch, 4) Chain Knitting with Twisted Drop Stitch, 5) Knitting with Double Yarn Over Drop Stitch, 6) Multiple Strand Knitting, 7) Knitting withBeads, 8) Chain Knitting with Beads, 9) Chain Knittinga Hat-in-the-Round with Double Point Needles (DPNs), and 1o) Chain Knitting a Hat-in-the-Round with the Magic Loop. The following Sections describe where I found my US 35 and US 50 needles and how I learned to do each of the stitches.
US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles
US 35 and US 50 knitting needles come in single point straights, double point straights, and circulars. One interesting thing to note is that some US 35s are 19mm in diameter and some US 35s are 20mm in diameter. In The Yarn Tales Projects Section, I specify whether I used 19mm or 20mm US 35s, however, with such large needles, a lmm (20-l9=l) difference really doesn't make much of a difference with scarves, wraps, afghans, blankets, and hats. You can use either 19mm or 20mm US 35s for the US 35 projects in this book. One other interesting thing is that Addi calls their 20mm needle a US 36. All of these variations on US 35s work really well for all of the US 35 projects in this book. I was in a yarn store once and two ladies were asking me about the size of the stitches in my scarf. One of them asked, "why don't you just use broom handles to knit with." The other said, "Because broom handles
Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles
don't have points." I reached in my bag and took out my pair of 14 inch US 50 Jenkins Woodworking straight needles, made of Maple with two inch tapered points, and held them up and said, "Mine do." US 50s really are about the size of broom handles. They can be a little bit difficult to hold. I sit down when I knit with them. I rest them against my body when I'm throwing the yarn around the needle. US 35s and US 50s can be purchased at craft stores, your Local Yarn Shop (LYS), at online yarn shops, and on ebay and Etsy.
Knitting Needle Companies
The following knitting needle company websites provide lots of information on what needles they have available. Most of these websites are for wholesale and do not sell directly to knitters, so I use them to learn what to ask for at my LYS (Local Yarn Store). \* web: Crystal Palace. Home of Crystal Palace Daisy Knitting Needles. Crystal Palace is a Wholesale ONLY supplier. They do not sell directly to knitters. Crystal Palace Daisy Knitting Needles are available at yarn shops. I get mine from YarnMarket.com. My 1o" US 35 Crystal Palace Daisy lightweight resin knitting needles are my go-to needles for scarves. The action is very smooth and the pink and green colored ones have a great tapered tip that glides through multiple strands of yarn. I use their set of four l2" uS 35 double point needles for my Chain Knitting Hat-in-the-Round DPN projects. I also use their 5o" uS 35 circulars for my Chain Knitting Hat-in-the-Round Magic Loop projects Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles the cable is wonderfully thin and flexible \* web: Jenkins Woodworking sells their wooden knitting needles directly to knitters. I have their 24" US 35 (19mm) circulars, their 32" US 35 (20mm, special order) circulars, two pair of their 14" US 50 (25mm, one pair with the regular order 1.5 inch tapered tip and one pair with a special order 2 inch tapered tip), and two pair of their 32" US 50 (25mm, one pair with the regular order 1.5 inch tapered tip and one pair with a special order 2 inch tapered tip) circulars. Each pair is made to order and they are absolutely awesome to knit with. Very smooth and the circulars have nice heavy cables, which makes them really great to use when I'm knitting up a big wrap, afghan, or blanket. I love using my Jenkins Maple US 35 and US 50 knitting needles. \* web: Skacel, home of Addi Needles. The Skacel website is for Wholesale. They do not sell directly to knitters. Knit Knots
There are four knots that I use all the time when I knit. They are the Slip Knot, the Overhand Knot, the Square Knot, and the Sheet Bend Knot. Animated Knots by Grog is where I go when I need to learn how to tie a knot.

e-Cast On
Casting on is how you first put your yarn on the needle when you start a new project. I use the e-cast on for my scarves, wraps, afghans, and blankets. I do the ecast on a little bit different than the way I first learned it. The following videos from www.knittinghelp.com and www.planetpurl.com show the standard way of doing the e-cast on. US35/50LastStitchoftheBindoff
When you knit the last stitch from the left needle onto the right needle during the bind off, such that the last two stitches are on the right needle, you'll notice that the last stitch has a lot of slack in it. If you bind off that final stitch without removing the slack, it'll stay there in the final piece and you won't be able to get rid of it. Before you finish the bind off, gently pull the slack out of the yarn in that last stitch until the yarn is snug up against the needle, then finish the bind off. My US50s Chain Knitting Bind Off video shows how I do my bind off and how I take the slack out of that last stitch (P.S. In this video, when I get to the last two Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles stitches, at time 2:03, I say "Before you do that first one" when I meant to say "Before you do that last one"). \* web: US50s Chain Knitting Bind Off YouTube Video
US 35/50 Weaving in the Ends
When using US 35s and US 50s, you're not going to be able to hide the ends of the tail when you weave them in because the stitches are just way too big. I cut my tail pieces three to six inches long. I tie an Overhand knot in the end of the tail piece, which helps to hold the end of the tail piece in the stitch. If it's a multiple strand piece, the Overhand knot also holds all of the strands of yarn together. I push the Overhand knot through the stitches with my fingers until the tail is weaved in. Sometimes the Overhand knot pokes out after I've worn my scarf. If it does, I just push the knot back into the scarf. If someone sees the tail piece or the Overhand knot sticking out, then they'll know it's a hand knit piece, which isn't a bad thing because it lets them know that someone took the time to knit your beautiful scarf for you. I learned how to do the Knit Stitch by watching videos on www.knittinghelp.com and www.planetpurl.com. There is more than one way to do the Knit Stitch so I recommend watching lots of videos until you find the method that works best for you. You can also do a search on YouTube for more Knit Stitch videos. I was able to knit right away on US 35s, but it took me three months before it felt comfortable to do so. When I started, I held the needles way too tight because I didn't want to drop them. Also, my hands would cramp up after just ten minutes of knitting. Copyright @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles But, after three months, I was able to knit with 35s and 50s for an hour at a time. And, after six months, I was able to knit with 35s and 50s for three hours at a time, which is how long it takes me to knit up one skein of Malabrigo Rasta (90 yards). Chain Knitting makes three strands of yarn from a single ball of yarn. I learned how to Chain Knit from watching Lucy Neatby's YouTube video on Navaho (Navajo) Knitting. In this book, I use the phrase Chain Knitting instead of Navaho (Navajo) Knitting. \*web: Navaho (Navajo) Knitting YouTube Video by Lucy Neatby Lucy Neatby is also the author of Cool Socks Warm Feet and the Learn with Lucy DVD series. Prepare the single strand of yarn for three strand Chain Knitting. Tie a slip knot; make the loop big enough to pass your hand through; pretend your hand is a big crochet hook; pass your hand through the loop; grab the yarn; pull the yarn through the loop just like doing a crochet chain stitch; straighten out your arm making an "arms length" chain stitch; let go of the yarn; you now have two strands of yarn when you hold this loop together; now grab the two strands of the loop, plus the single strand that's attached to the ball of yarn; hold all three strands together loosely and straighten out your arm; you now have three strands of yarn from a single ball of yarn. 2. Do a three strand cast on. Hold the three strands together; tie a slip knot; Cast on (e-cast on) thenumber of stitches called out in the pattern. While you're still casting on, before you run out of the three strands (because you will come to the end of the loop), put your hand through the loop, grab the yarn, and pull the yarn through the loop again. You need to keep an eye on this loop because it will disappear into Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles your knitting before you realize it. 3. Chain Knit. Hold the three strands together and Chain Knit all rows. Wow! What beautiful yarn. It absolutely captured me. Only 35 yards. "Can I make a Scarf with this?", "How can I make the yarn do all the work?", and "How can I get the best snuggle up value out of this ball of yarn?" That's what I asked myself as I held this beautiful yarn in my hand. So, I tried US 50s. I e-cast on 4. I tried a double yarn over and I dropped both stitches on the way back. I ended up with a 4 inches wide by 72 inch long absolutely beautiful scarf.

A Multiple Strand Knitting project is one where two or more yarns are held together and are knit together as if they were just one big yarn. They can be multiple strands of the same kind of yarn, and they can be multiple strands of completely different yarns. Here is my US50s Multiple Strand Knitting video on YouTube. \* web: US50s YouTube Videos \* web: US50s Multiple Strand Knitting YouTube Video Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles Knitting with Beads

To knit with beads, I string the beads onto lace weight Yarn and then I Multiple Strand Knit the beaded lace weight yarn with one or more other strands of yarn. To get the beads onto the lace weight yarn, I thread the lace weight yarn into a curved big eye beading needle and then I use a bead spinner to string seed beads onto the curved big eye beading needle and then onto the lace weight yarn. I also like to add a novelty bead or two in between the seed beads. Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles Bead Spinners and Curved Big Eye Beading Needles are available in craft stores, in bead stores, at online bead stores, and on ebay and Etsy. Here's how I do Knitting with Beads: 1. Thread the lace weight yarn into a curved big eye beading needle. 2. Load the bead spinner with lots of seed beads. 3. Use the bead spinner to string a whole lot of seed beads onto the lace weight yarn. 4. Occasionally add a novelty bead in between the seed beads. 5. Spread the beads out. 6. Hold the beaded lace weight yarn together with the other yarns and do multiple strand knitting. 7. Re-string more beads onto the lace weight yarn when you run out of beads. 8. Bind off & Weave in. Here are my US50s Chain Knitting with Beads YouTube videos, which isn't exactly the same as Knitting with Beads, but these videos do show you how to get the beads onto the lace weight yarn.

"Be brave, be very brave." That's what I say to myself every time I pick up a set of four Us 35 double point needles to start a new hat project. There's no simple way to describe how to knit a hat other than say cast on, join, knit round and round, decrease, and finish, but that doesn't really help. It's taken me a year to teach myself how to make this hat, which is Chain Knitted on four US 35 double point needles. The good news is that it only takes three to four hours to actually make this hat. I tie it together and make a Left Over Yarn scarf. I Chain Knit all the yarn except for the bulky and super bulky pieces. It can make for a strange looking scarf, but I know that if I was very young and had just started knitting, and if a someone had given me all of their bits and pieces of left over yarn, I know that I would have tied those bits and pieces of left over yarn together and I would have knit them up without a second thought about what it looked like. Winding Yarn
When you're in your Lys (local yarn shop) and you buy that beautiful skein of yarn and the person working there asks, "Do you need your yarn wound?", say "Yes, please." A lot of yarn comes in balls that are ready to knit with. A lot of yarn comes in hanks or skeins that need to be wound into balls before they can be used. If the skein of yarn isn't wound into a ball of yarn, it will get all tangled up when you try to knit with it. So go ahead and let them wind your yarn for you when you buy it in your LYS. When you're ready to wind your own yarn, which you will need to do if you start to buy yarn online, you'll need Copyright @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles a Yarn Swift to hold the skein of yarn, and you'll need a Ball Winder to wind the yarn up into a ball. Yarn Swifts and Ball Winders are available at craft stores, Local Yarn Shops (LYSs), at online yarn shops, and on ebay and Etsy. I started with the Knit Picks Yarn Swift and the Knit Picks Ball Winder. I still use the Knit Picks Yarn Swift, but I wind so much yarn that I upgraded to the Heavy Duty Ball Winder at Nancy's Knit Knacks. Nancy's Knit Knacks Heavy Duty Ball Winder is an absolutely magnificent piece of engineering and craftsmanship. A handful of my LYSs (Local Yarn Shops) use it. That's where I first saw it. They had both the hand crank version and the electric version. I bought the hand crank version. It's very solid, it's very gentle on my yarns, it winds up my big 250 yard bulky weight, 500 yard aran weight, 700 yard sport weight, and 1ooo yard lace weight skeins into great looking balls that are very, very easy to knit from with a high degree of confidence that my yarn is not going to get all tangled up as I pull it from the ball (I pull from the outside). My mom likes to buy afghan kits with ten to twenty skeins that I wind up in no time at all for her. It comes with all the tools you need to keep it tuned up in great working condition. For me, Nancy'S Knit Knacks Heavy Duty Ball Winder was a really good investment. I was having trouble with really big skeins of yarn falling off the bottom of the swift as I was getting towards the end of the skein. I solved the problem by Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles attaching my swift to a camera tripod so the swift points to the left (horizontal) instead of pointing up (vertical) and the yarn unwinds in the upright position. Now my really big skeins of yarn can't fall off the bottom of the swift. One word of caution: tangles. There is a level of skill required to loading a skein of yarn onto a yarn swift to make sure that the yarn doesn't get twisted on the swift. I've lost three skeins of yarn by not realizing that the yarn got twisted when I put it onto the swift. Everything jammed up and there was a tangle way too big for me to untangle (by way too big, I mean that by day twelve of not making too much progress at untangling it, I finally tossed the yarn out). You can always wind the skein of yarn by hand. This method is highly recommended to keep the yarn from stretching. This is the method used by my mother's aunts when my mom was young. My mom held the skein of yarn out between both of her hands while her aunts wound the yarn into a ball by hand. If you can't find someone to hold the yarn for you while you wind it into a ball, you can always put the skein of yarn on a yarn swift and wind it up into a ball by hand. The Yarn Tales Projects
The Yarn Tales Projects are yarn-based projects instead of pattern-based projects, which means that the patterns are very easy and it's the yarn that's the star of the project. The patterns are really just simple stitch work repeated over and over for all rows. Each project uses just one of the following stitch works: the Knit Stitch (Garter Stitch), Chain Knitting, Knitting with Twisted Drop Stitch, Chain Knitting with Twisted Drop Stitch, Knitting with Double Yarn Over Drop Stitch, Multiple Strand Knitting, Knitting with Beads, Chain Knitting with Beads, Chain Knitting a Hatin-the-Round with DPNs, or Chain Knitting a Hat-in-theRound with the Magic Loop. My process for starting a new project is to go to one or more of my LYSs (Local Yarn Shops) or favoriteonline shops, pick out the yarns that I want to use, pick out a stitch work that I want to use, decide which size needles I want to use, decide how many stitches I want to cast on based on how long and how wide I want the work to be, knit up the yarn using the stitch work that I've picked out, bind off, weave in the ends, take a picture, write down what I did (so I can repeat it if someone else wants one), and then I give the knitted up item to the person or to the pet that I knitted it up for. Then I start the process all over again. Feel free to sell any of the items that you make from the projects and patterns in this book. Have fun, happy knitting, warmest regards, Steve. How do I Know When to Bind off?
"Will I run out of yarn before I do the bind off?" or "Do I have enough yarn to do the bind off?" These questions are even harder to answer when you're working on a big wrap or blanket and there's 30 to 60 triple strand chain knitting stitches on the needles. I've tried putting the ball of yarn on a digital scale before I start a row and then again after finishing a row to see how many grams it takes to knit up a row, but that method doesn't always work for me. I like to figure out how many arm lengths of yarn it takes for me to knit up a whole row. I try one arm length, then two, then three. If it takes three arm lengths of yarn to knit a whole row, then when I'm getting down to the end of the ball of yarn, I pull three arm lengths of yarn before starting to knit each row. After I do three arm lengths, if it looks like there's no way I'm going to get a second three arm lengths, then I'm at the bind off row. That's my method. It's a lot of
Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles
stitches to have on the 10 inch 35s, but I made sure to always use the rubber band when I set the work down to keep the stitches from falling off. The Co 50/51 is because I know I cast on 5o, but half way through I noticed that I had 5l stitches on the needles. I decided to leave the 5l stitches on the needles and not do a k2tog to bring it back to 50. The safest thing is to go with the Co 50 and check every once and a while that you still have just 50 stitches on the needles. That will keep this wrap nice and long. Please note that this skein winds up into a very large ball of yarn. This skein is the reason why I bought my Nancy's Knit Knacks Heavy Duty Ball Winder. If you have a regular sized Ball Winder, you can wind the skein into more than one ball of yarn by filling up the winder, cutting the yarn, and winding the next ball. You can also consider putting the skein on a Yarn Swift and wind it up by hand into one large ball of yarn. I highly recommend Decadent Fibers Cotton Candy. My mom wrapped it around herself and said, "It's the prettiest thing I've ever seen." ¥web: Decadent Fibers \* web: www.knittinghelp.com \* web: www.planetpurl.com \* web: Slip Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Overhand Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Square Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Sheet Bend Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Backward Loop Cast On (or e-Cast On) Video at knittinghelp.com \* web: Backward Loop Cast On (or e-Cast On) YouTube Video by Beth Moriarty from Planet Purl \* web: The English Knit Stitch Video at Copvriqht @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles knittinghelp.com \* web: The Continental Knit Stitch Video at knittinghelp.com \* web: How to Knit the Garter Stitch YouTube Video by Beth Moriarty from Planet Purl \* web: Knit Stitch - Continental YouTube Video by Beth Moriarty from Planet Purl \* web: Bind Off Video at knittinghelp.com \* web: Bind Off YouTube Video by Beth Moriarty and Planet Purl Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles Decadent Fibers Creme Brulee 39. CO 8 (e-cast on). Knit all rows. Bind off. Weave in ends. \* Notes: This was my very first multiple strand knitted scarf. I don't even remember exactly what my cast on was (it looks like 8) and I don't remember what the name of the colors were. \* Notes: I was in one of my LYSs (local yarn shops) when the kind lady that owned the shop encouraged me to try knitting multiple strands held together. I remember her saying, "You should try multiple strands of different colors and textures." My mouth dropped wide open and the creative light bulb in my head turned on. \* Notes: I walked around the store and I picked out colors that I liked and textures that I liked. The result is this scarf. There was a lot of yarn left over so I made a second one and gave it to the kind lady that owned my LYS. \* Notes: Other knitters ask me, "How do you know what yarns will work together?" My answer is very simple, "I pick what I like." It works. I started knitting at the age of 5o. I taught myself using www.knittinghelp.com, YouTube, and www.planetpurl.com videos. I know nothing of fashion. I knit for the art and craft of it. I knit for relaxation. For me, all colors and all textures go very well together. \* web: Malabrigo Yarn \* web: Habu Textiles \* web: www.knittinghelp.com \* web: www.planetpurl.com \* web: Slip Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Overhand Knot at Animated Knots by Grog Copyright @ 2012 Steven Callaghan Yarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles \* web: Square Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: Sheet Bend Knot at Animated Knots by Grog \* web: US50s YouTube Videos web: US50s Multiple Strand Knitting YouTube Video 大web: US50s Chain Knitting Bind Off YouTube VideoYarn Tales: A Beginner's School of Knitting Scarves, Wraps, Afghans, Blankets, & Hats with US 35 & US 50 Knitting Needles 60.
