Oh My! Moguls Lorraine Ehrlinger Designs
These socks are knit using the traditional intarsia technique of knitting the color work flat and the solid part in the round. The socks were knit as part of an Olympic challenge. The pattern reminds me of the sking moguls and the back and forth wiggle needed to ski them. Leftover MC is shown in the center of the picture. Whew!!

Size: Woman's medium
Materials: 5 colors of fingering weight yarn; MC solid - I ball, CCs A, B, C, $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{D}}\boldsymbol{\cdot}\boldsymbol{\mathrm{\Pi}}/2$ ball each (This pattern works best with a combination of light and dark yarns.) 5 bobbins 2 Stitch holders Needles: US #1.5/2.5mm dp needles for foot and straight needles for leg, or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 17 sts and $20\mathrm{\rows}=2^{*}$
Chart A

Leg cuff
With MC and straight needles, cast on 61 sts. Follow chart A on left for 9 rows, ending ready to work a RS row. Follow the color chart until leg measures 7" or desired length. The MC outline stitches will use about 2 yds on the back of the leg and 3 yds on the front. I just used a long strand of Knit on RS, Purl on WS Purl on RS, Knit on WS yarn. Colors A, B, C, D were put on bobbins. Color A wil require 2 bobbins. Start at the bottom of the chart. Work to the top. Repeat from green line to the top 2 more times. Put side stitches on stitch holders and work center section between red lines for $3~\%^{\mathfrak{N}}$ . Put these stitches on a dp needle when finished.

Heel Move stitches from holders to dp needles. These are the heel stitches. You can seam the back of the leg after $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ row is worked. With MC, start on WS and purl all stitches, working p2tog in the center to connect the two sides. (30 heel sts). The heel flap is $2\ {^{1}\!/\!4}^{,\;\ast}$ long. Follow Chart A for 1 1/8". Change to chart B and work until heel measures $2\ {^{1}\!/\!4}^{,\;\ast}$

Line up the Chart B stitches so that the diagonal immediately starts back in the opposite direction. You may need to start in the middle of the chart. End ready to start a WS row. Heel turn P 17, p2tog, p1, turn. Row i: Sl1, k5, ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: Sl1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: Sl1, k7.... Continue rows 1 & 2 in this manner, with 1 more stitch in the center until all stitches are used. Gusset On the left side of the heel flap, pick up and knit 15 sts. Turn and purl all stitches. Pick up and purl 15 sts from the other side of the heel flap. Turn. Start connecting to the color work section by working a k2tog with the first MC As you work the gusset, connect it to the color work section by ending each purl row with a p2tog. End each knit side row with a ssk. This will make a very smooth join. On each knit side row, start with k1, ssk. Work to last 3 sts. k2tog, k1, connecting to the color work at each side. Continue decreases until 15 sts remain on each needle. Continue connecting each row until the MC is even with the color work. At this point work in the round until 7" or desired foot length is reached. Toe This is a wedge toe worked with 5 dp needles. Rnd 1: Needles 1 & 3; k1, ssk, work to end of needle. Needles 2 & 4; work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Rnd 2: Knit Work rounds 1 & 2 until 8 sts remain on each needle, then work round 1 only until 4 sts remain on each needle. Graft toe. Sew back leg seam if you have not already done so. Work $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ sock.
