Wakefield Socks

This was knit with my own handspun 3 ply yan, 3.5 oz of Spunky Eclectic BFL in the Galaxy Mars colourway, 320 yards $/292\:\mathrm{m}$ (l used a total of 255 yds/233 m for the socks). The second version was knit with Araucania Ranco which has 376 yds per 3.53 oz (344 m per 100 gm), lused 258 yds/236 m for the socks. Other good yarns would be Estelle Cadenza or Fleece Artist sock yarns or any yarn that has about 320-370 yds/3.5 oz $(300{-}345\,\mathsf{m}/100\,\mathsf{g m})$ . I am a medium size in socks, using a thinner or thicker yarn will give you smaller or larger socks, the socks in the Ranco came out a bit smaller. This pattern is written for two circulars (or magic loop) but you can also divide the stitches for dpns. The socks were knit top down, but the pattern would work equallywelteup. Needles: 2.5 mm (1.5 US) Gauge over4" (10cm): 30 stitches by 40 rows with the handspun, 32 stitches by 44 rows with the Ranco in stockinette stitch. Cuff: Loosely cast on 60 stitches (lused a loose long tail cast on). Divide the stitches between the two circulars, join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Work p1, k1 tbl ribbing for 10 rounds (the ribbing on the handspun was 20 rounds). Be sure to start with p1 so that the pattern wil aign with the ribbing. Work the chart until sock leg measures about 6 inches ( $\left(16\thinspace\mathsf{c m}\right)$ or desired length, ending on row 12 or 24 (1 knit 2 repeats of the 24 row pattern for the handspun and $2\%$ repeats forthe Ranco socks - ending on row 12). Heel: Purl first stitch of Needle 1, slide this stitch onto Needle 2 - these 31 stitches on Needle 2 will be the top of the foot. You will work the stitches back and forth on Needle 1 only (29 stitches). Row 1: [sl 1 purlwise wyib, k1] 14 times, k1. Row 2: sl 1 purlwise, p28. Repeat rows 1 and 2 untilheelflap measures $2\%$ to $2\%$ inches (5.5 to 6.5 cm). (I worked these 2 rows 16 times - 32 rows total). End on Row 2.
Turn heel:
Row 1: Sl1 pwise wyib, k16, ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: Sl1 pwise wyif, p6, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: Sl1 pwise wyib, k7, ssk, k1, turn. Row 4: Sl1 pwise wyif, p8, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 5: Sl1 pwise wyib, k9, ssk, k1, turn. Row 6: Sl1 pwise wyif, p10, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 7: Sl1 pwise wyib, k11, ssk, k1, turn. Row 8: Sl1 pwise wyif, p12, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 9: Sl1 pwise wyib, k13, ssk, k1, turn. Row 10: Sl1 pwise wyif, p14, p2tog, p1, turn Row 11: Sl1 pwise wyib, k15, ssk, turn. Row 12: Sl1 pwise wyif, p15, p2tog, turn. Row 13: Sl1 pwise wyib, k16. 17 stitches remain. WhenIpick up the stitches to start working onthe gusset, Icram althe stitches to be picked up along with theheelstitchesonto one needle. tis a bit tight forafewrounds but isquickly moremanageable as you begin the decreases. Pick up and knit 16 to 18 stitches through the larger slipped stitches along the edge. Iuse the left needle to lifthe slipped stitch and then knit i through the back to twist it to avoid gaping holes along the edge. Knit 1 stitch between heel fap and top of foot, into the twisted stitch of the pattern, again knit it through the back so as to continue the twisted stitch in the pattern. Knit across top of foot in pattern (you will now have that extra purl stitch you moved when beginning the heel flap - so work the chart 3 times, purl 1). Knit 1 between top of foot and heel fap, into the twisted stitch, knit it through the back to maintain twist pattern. Continue picking up and knitting the slipped stitches. Do not worry about the exact number of stitches picked up, you just don't want to leave any gaping holes. Knit to the end of Needle 1. Gusset: Work the gusset decreases as follows: Round 1: Knit across Needle 2 (top of foot) in pattern, Needle 1 (sole) - ssk knit to last 2 stitches k2tog. Round 2: Knit across Needle 2 in pattern, knit across Needle 1. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 31 stitches remaining on Needle 1 You should have a total of 62 stitches, 31 for the top of the foot, 31 for the sole. Continue in patterm until the foot measures $z"$ (5 cm) less than the desired length. End on row 12 or 24. You may need to knit a few rounds in stockinette to reach the desired length if row 12 or 24 falls below the 2" (l knit 4 rounds before starting the toe shaping on the sock knit with the Araucania Ranco). Toe: Round 1: On both needles - K1, ssk knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Round 2: On both needles - knit. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 26 stitches remain, 13 per needle. Finish: Cut yarn, laving about 12" (30cm) tail Thread a tapestry needle and graft stitches using the Kitchenersttch. Weave in ends.
