Pattern Notes

This pattern utilizes short-rows to create a slouch effect. Instead of the usual wrapand-turn method it uses the YO method. It's great smallproject to learn a new (and very easy) technique. When measuring, do so with the RSfacing you and alongthe right hand edge.

Abbreviations

See http://www.yarnstandards.com/knit.html Short Row Turning Yarn Over Method): When short rows are turned in this pattern, the directions wil read as follows: Work [number of sts],turn. I his means: Knit number of specified sts then turn work to begin working back in the other direction. Bring the yarn between the needles to front of work and then over the right needle to back of work, forming a YO on the right needle; you are now ready to knit the next row. When you reach this YO on a subsequent row, knit the YO together with the following stitch. This willclose the hole that would otherwise be formed by the short row.

Pattern

CO 58[70] sts. Row I: \*K2, p2; rep from \* untilast sts, k2. Row 2: \* P2, k ; re from \* untilast sts, p2. Rep these two rows until piece measures 2 inches, ending on WS. Continuing in pattern, shape hat as follows: Next row: Work 56[68] sts, turn. Work 48[56] sts, turn. Work 44[52] sts, turn. Work 40[48] sts, turn. Work 36[44] sts, turn. Work 32[40] sts, turn. Work 28[36] sts, turn. Work 24[32] sts, turn. Work 20[28] sts, turn. Work 16[24] sts, turn. \*Note: Some people may find it easier to pay attention to the gap rather than count sts. After the frst two turns, you are knitting until sts before the gap, then tuning. Continue in this way until you have completed 10 turns in total (there will be 5 YOs either side). Then begin the next row. Next row: Work across all sts, knitting each YO together with next st as described above. Rep last row--all sts should now have been worked. Rep Rows 1 & 2 until piece measures $5[6]$ inches along edge, ending on WS. Next row [RS]: \*K2, p2tog; rep from \* until last 2 sts, k2. Next row: \* P2, k1; rep from \* untilast sts, p2.
