Day's Eye Cable Knit Hat Pattern: A Sunny Chapeau for Cool Spring Days in Soft Merino Wool

Pattern illustration

by Kristen Hanley Cardozo In Old English, the daisy was called “day's eye" for its habit of opening at the first light of dawn and shutting as the light faded. Common but never unexceptional, the daisy is one of my favorite flowers. The tangled cables of this comfy hat travel up and twist themselves into a nine-petal daisy on top, making any day a little sunnier. Knit in soft merino wool, the twisted stitches pop against a reverse stockinette background to make an unusual and pretty chapeau for a cool spring day. SIZE one size fits most adult heads

Notes:

To lengthen the hat for greater slouch, you can add more reps of Round 19. You do not need to knit through the back loop when making a cable or twist. If you prefer to work the twisted sts without a cable needle, use the following instructions. This way of working is a little challenging, but does eliminate the need for a cable needle. Cable right: With yarn in back, k second st on left hand needle. Bring yarn to front and p the skipped st. Sl both sts from left hand needle. Cable left: P through back loop of second st on left hand needle. Bring yarn to back and k the skipped st. Sl both sts from left hand needle. Twist right: With yarn in back, k second st on left hand needle. K the skipped st. Sl both sts from left hand needle. Twist left: With yarn in back, bring working needle behind first st on left hand needle. K second st on left hand needle. K the skipped st. Sl both sts from left hand needle. Brim: Using size US 4 circular needle, CO 108 st, PM, and join to knit in the round being careful not to twist. Round 1: [P1, kltbl, p1], rep to end of round. Work Round 1 8 more times, or until brim measures 1 inch from CO edge. Transition Round: \*P1, M1p, (k1tbl, p2) 3 times, kltbl, p1, M1p; rep from \* to end. 126 sts.

Hat Body:

Using size 7 needle, work from Day's Eye Cable Chart (opposite) Rounds 1 through 45, repeating the chart across the entire round. On Round 46, sl the last st from the previous round onto the left hand needle and work together with the first st of the round. Continue as charted through Round 48. 9 sts remain. Break yarn, thread tapestry needle, draw through remaining sts and pull tight.

Finishing:

Weave in ends. Block lightly. Wear and enjoy!
