Knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches from your cable needle. C8f - slip 4 stitches to cabie needle and hold at the front of your work. Knit 4 stitches, knit 4 stitches from your cable needle.
Difference between Size Small and Medium:
Size Small is for a smaller hat (I have a head circumference of 54 cm and made the hat to fit me). Size Medium is for a bigger hat and also if you want more slouch or the fold-over brim (I can still wear it, but I think it is a little bit too lose for me). You could easily modify the pattern - for example knit a 2x2 rib instead of the twisted rib. Or use the stitch count for the smaller hat, but make it longer, so you can fold over the brim, if you still prefer a more snug fitting hat. You could even add more purl stitches in between the cables to make an even bigger sized hat. Or you could leave some of the purl stitches out and make a smaller hat.

Written instructions
In this pattern you find a combination of bigger and smaller cables. The smaller cables are going to be worked on every 4th row, the bigger one on every8throw. I prefer to do the cables in the front of the work, but if you prefer to do the cables in the back of the work, don't hesitate to switch them out. I included a chart for you, because in my opinion, charts are always helpful in order to make it easier for me to "read" my knitting and know what it is supposed to look like. But I didn't include the hat decreases in the chart - that would have been too confusing.
Ribbing:
Cast on 144/152 stitches 0n your smaller needle and divide them either on your DPNs or on your long circular needle for the magic-loop-method. Join your knitting in the round and begin knitting in twisted rib pattern (First round: k1,p1; after that: k1 through the back loop which twists the stitch, p1) for 25 rounds, or until the brim of your hat measures about 6 cm long. Switch to bigger needles for the rest of the hat. Body of the hat: If you want to use stitch markers to mark the repeats, you can put them in intervals of 18/19 stitches. R1: \*p3, k4, p3/p4, k8\* - repeat until the end of the round (8 times total) R2:as R1 R3: as R1 R4: \*p3, C4f, p3/p4, C8f\* - repeat until the end of the round R5:as R1 R6: as R1 R7: as R1 R8: \*p3, C4f, p3/p4, k8\* - repeat until the end of the round Repeat R1 - R8 until you have knit: - Size S: 52 rows (6.5 pattern repeats), ending with the pattern in R4. Hat measures 13 cm + 6 cm ribbing = 19 cm before the start of the decreases. Size M: 68 rows (8.5 repeats), ending with the pattern in R4. Hat measures 19 cm + 6 cm ribbing = 25 cm before the start of the decreases.

Cut the yarn, while leaving a long enough tail, and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Use this needle to feed it through all 16 stitches that are left on your needles and pull them off your needles one by one. Pull the yarn tight in order to close the top of the hat and weave in all the ends. Wash and block the finished hat. I blocked my hats over a balloon, it really helped to open up the cables and give the hat the slouch I wanted.
And now you are done!!! Yay!!
