Pattern:
These socks are knit from the toe up with an invisible seam and in the round. Start with casting on 20 sts on two DPNs using Judy"s magic cast on. Each needle will hold 10 sts. Your first row will be a knit row. R1: With a third DPN from your set, knit into each cast on sts on needle 1. With the now freed 1st DPN knit all sts on needle 2. Now distribute all 20 sts evenly on 4 DPNs (5 sts/needle) with the knit side showing to the outside towards you. Set a stitch marker between first and last stitch to mark the beginning/end of a round. Move the stitch marker up every few rounds. R2: DPN1 and DPN3: K1, M1, K4 - DPN2 and DPN4: K4,M1,K1 = 24 sts R3 and all uneven rounds to R15: k all sts R4: DPN1, DPN3: K1, M1, K5 - DPN2, DPN4: K5, M1, K1 R6: DPN1, DPN3: K1, M1, K6 - DPN2, DPN4: K6, M1, K1 R8: DPN1, DPN3: K1, M1, K7 - DPN2, DPN4: K7, M1, K1 R10: DPN1,DPN3: K1,M1, K8 - DPN2, DPN4: K8, M1, K1 R12: DPN1,DPN3: K1,M1, K9 - DPN2, DPN4: K9, M1, K1 R14: DPN1,DPN3: K1,M1,K10 - DPN2, DPN4: K10, M1, K1 Each needle should be holding 12 sts (total of 48 sts). R16: Set up for RFC cable pattern: DPN1 and DPN3: K3, P1, K8 - DPN2 and DPN4: K7, P1, K3, P1 R17: Repeat R16 R18: DPN1 and DPN3: RFC over first 3 sts, P1, K8 DPN2 and DPN4: K7, P1, RFC over next 3 sts, P1 R19-21: Repeat R16. Repeat R18 - 21 twelve more times (13 RFC repeats) and finish with a R18. Total: 70 rows or 20.5 cm/7.5 in. About 3.5 cm/1.5 in before the heel turns.
Short-row heel
Knit heel over DPN 1 and 2 sts (24 sts) back and forth (not in the round) for 14 rows. All right-side (RS) rows: knit, all wrong-side rows: purl. R1 (RS): k 23 sts, leave last stitch (st) on left needle, turn, R2 (WS): slip first st, p 21 sts, leave last st on left needle, turn R3 (RS): slip first st, k 20 sts, leave last st on left needle (there are now 2 parked sts!), turn Continue in this way until 7 sts parked on each side. Last short-row was: R14 (WS), slip 1 st, purl 9 sts, turn. ow the parked sts, 7 on each side, will be picked up in the next 14 rows R15 (RS): Slip the first stitch, knit 8 sts to one stitch before the gap. Slip the stitch before the gap onto the right hand needle, pick up the bar running between the gap and the next parked st and put it on the right hand needle, knit the slipped stitch and the picked up bar together. Slip the next st (first parked st) from the left to the right DPN and turn. R16 (Ws): slip the first st with the yarn wrapping it, p 9 sts to one st before gap. Slip the st before gap onto right needle, pick up the bar running in the gap between slip st and parked st and slip it next to slipped st. Ptog slip st and picked up bar st. Slip next st (parked st) from left to right DPN and turn. At this point there should be 6 parked sts on each side and 12 sts in the middle. Continue in this way until all parked sts have been picked up and knit (last row will be a purl row = 30 rows for heel). The next row/round will start at marker and be knit in ankle pattern over all 4 DPNs in the round: R1: DPN1 and DPN3: K3, P1, (K1P1)x 4 - DPN2 and DPN4: (K1P1) x4, K3, P1 R2: Repeat R1 R3: Repeat R1 R4: DPN1, DPN3: RFC over first 3 sts, P1, (K1P1) x 4 DPN2, DPN4: (K1P1) x 4, RFC over next 3 sts, P1 Continue in ankle pattern and repeat seven times (= 28 rounds from heel). Switch to K1P1 for all sts x 10 rows. Bind off losely. Weave in ends. First sock is finished. Repeat for second sock.
