Cicada pouch

Gauge: unimportant Needle size: Two subsequent needle sizes, starting with the smallest needle recommended for the yarn. For example, if it says '3-4 mm' on the yarn band, use 3 mm and 3.5 mm needles. Yarn: Lace weight is recommended, but any yarn from lace weight to 4-ply will work. The yarns used in the examples are Manos del Uruguay lace, approx. 40 meters (above); and Tosh sock 4-ply, approx. 45 meters (below). This pouch is inspired by the cicada, an order of large, loud and not very intelligent insects. Most famous of these is perhaps the periodical cicada, which spends 17 years as a nymph underground, only to die 4 to 6 weeks after emerging as an adult. The pouch is a good way of using up thin yarns of which you only have less than 5o meters left. It is worked in 3 parts: the front, back, and wings. The wings are attached to the front; front and back are subsequently sewn together. The size of the pouch will depend on the yarn and needle size used. The example in lace weight is 10 cm long; the example in 4-ply is 14 cm long. Abbreviations: K = Knit P = Purl YO = Yarn over k2tog = knit 2 together ssk = slip 2 stitches knitwise, then knit slipped stitches together inc = Increase in the next stitch using your favourite method inc5 =(K1, wrap yarn around needle, K1, wrap yarn around needle, Ki) all in one stitch MB: Make bramble: knit the next 5 stitches, then pass the first 4 stitches one by one over the 5th.

Block the large wings to taste, preferably following the outline of the body. Place the front and back with right side on each other. Sew closed along the edge. Be careful to only sew wings with the seams if and where you want to! Turn right-side out. Weave in ends. Thread a ribbon or a braid of yarn through the eyelets at the top. Finish the ribbon with a bead, or just a knot. You're done! Pattern by Medeia Designs, January 2012 (medeiadesigns.blogspot.com). For personal, noncommercial use only.
