Special Instructions

$\supseteq$ needlebind off:

Position needles side by side (needle 1 and needle 2), pointing the same direction. Using a $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ needle, Ktog the $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ st from each needle 1 and 2 onto needle 3. Ktog the next st from each needle. There are now 2 sts on needle 3. Pass the first stitch over the $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ St. Ktog the next st from needles 1 and 2. Pass 1st st over $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ st. Continue until all sts have been bound off.

Instructions

There are five pieces to the bag: Body, flap, pouch, strap, and strap tab. Pattern: The entire bag (excluding strap & tab) is worked in St st. (knit on RS, purl on WS rows).

Body:

Starting at the top edge of quiver, cast on 42 sts with single strand of color B. With RS facing, starting with a K row, work 4 rows in St. st. Drop color B. With color A, work 10 morerows. Begin decreases for bag shaping as follows. Decreases wil take place on rows 15, 25, 37, 47, 59, and 69. Dec 1 st each end of needle as follows: K2, SSK, K to within last four sts on needle, K2tog, K2. Allother rows are worked evenly. After last dec row (69), P row 70. DropcolorA. Next row is the beginning of the bottom cuff. Using a double strand of color B, work even in St st for 11 rows. Row 82 is a purl row, but purl only half(15) of the sts. Fold the work in half with RS together so that both needles are side by side facing the same direction. With third needle, work a 3-needle bind off across these sts (See Special Instructions), leaving a long tail of yarn. Thread tail into a yarn needle and draw through last st on needle 3. With same yarn and needle, sew up the side of the cuff to the top edge of the cuff color. Leave the rest of the seam open and turn the quiver right side out.

Flap:

The flap is knitted along the front let opening of the quiver when it is turned right side out. Using a size 11 needle and starting at the top edge of Color A, pick up 34 sts, one stitch in from the edge all the way down to the beginning of the cuff seam. Using Color A, with RS facing, work 12 rows in St st. With RS facing, use point of needle holding the work to pick up 8 sts across the bottom of the flap. Drop Color A. With Color B, knit one row. At end of this row, use the free needle to pick up 8 sts across the top of flap and continue knitting across these 8 sts with Color B. You now have 50 sts and one row of the flap border done. Turn work and continue working border in St st for 3 more rows. LOOSELY bind off all sts. Cut yarn and pull through last stitch. With tail of yarn, whip st together the end of the flap border to the end of the top quiver border so that the two borders are connected.

Pouch:

Fold the quiver lengthwise in thirds so that the left flap side of the quiver lays over the right side quiver edge. Lay quiver on table with the closed opening of the quiver face side down. The center third of the quiver is facing up. Using a knitting needle, pick up 15 stitches approximately 1 inch above the cuff line and centered between the two folded edges of the quiver. Continuing in St st, begin knitting these 15 sts for the pouch. On row 3 begin increases: K6, Kf&b, K1, Kf&b, K6. Purl next and every alternate row. Continue increases on every K row, knitting 2 more sts between the kf&b sts on each row until there are 19 sts between the Kf&b sts. There are 35 sts on the needle. Continue working even in St st until the pouch measures 9". Drop Color A. Using Color B, work 4 more rows of St st. Loosely bind off. Cut yarn and pull through last stitch. Align and pin sides of the pouch along the column of sts even with st 1 and st 15, respectively, at the bottom of the pouch. The pouch opening will be very floppy. Using matching yarn and a yarn needle, sew pouch sides to the quiver, using the slip st.

Strap:

Begin knitting strap in the top corner of the right side opening of the quiver as follows: Using a knitting needle, pick up 10 sts 2" down from the top edge of the quiver and 1" in from the side opening edge. Using color A, the strap is worked in garter st, making a belted I-Cord.

K8 sts, yf, Sllast 2 sts. Turn, K8 sts, yf, Sl last 2 stst. Continue this pattern until the strap measures 19".

Begin strap decreases: Row 1: K2, K2tog, K2, K2tog, yf, sl2 Row 2: K2, K2tog, K2tog, yf, sl2 Row 3: K2, K2tog, yf, sl2 Row 4: K2tog, K1, K2tog Row 5: K2tog, K1 Row 6: K2tog Cut yarn and pull through last st.

Strap Tab:

With Color A, pick up 8 sts just above the top of bottom cuff, V2" inside the edge opening of the right front section of quiver (not the flap side). Work same pattern as for strap, only K6 sts, yf, sl last 2 sts. Continue until tab measures 3". Begin tab decreases: Row 1: K1, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1 Row 2: K1, K2tog, K2tog, K1 Row 3: K1, K2tog, K1 Bind off last 3 sts. Cut yarn and pull through last st. Weave in all ends of yarn on the quiver.

FELTING INSTRUCTIONS

Set washer to a normal wash cycle with the lowest water level and fill with hot water. Add 1Tbs.liquid laundry detergent, or dish soap. Place quiverin a zippered, mesh laundry bag and immerse in washer. Felting can take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes. The length of time it takes to felt can vary with water temperature and force of agitation. SET A TIMER AND CHECK ON QUIVER EVERY COUPLE OF MINUTES or you may end up with a. Barbie-sized quiver. It is easy to get distracted, so make sure you are not out of earshot of your timer. (When checking the quiver, I use rubber gloves and a big stainless steel bowl.) Pull the bag with quiver out of the water, squeeze out as much water as possible and place the bag in the bowl. Open the bag, and pull the quiver out. Using a tape measure, check length. If the quiver is stillonger than $13\,\%$ ," it needs to go back in the washer. Put back in bag, zip closed, and place in washer. Reset your timer for not more than 2 minutes (1 minute if quiver is geting close to the desired length). You may have to check and reset timer several times. When quiver is 13," take to the kitchen sink and rinse out al soap in cool water. Squeeze out as much water as possible, then wrap in a towel. Place towel on the floor and step on it to squeeze out any excess water. Take quiver out of towel, and shape. This can take a litle pulling and stretching. Make sure to stretch the strap to at least 17" and the tab to 3." Lay the quiver flat in a closed position, and stretch the top opening a little. The right side opening will be a little longer than the left flap side. This is okay because the flap needs to fit under the strap when the quiver is closed. If the right side opening seems a little too long, it can be pulled down a litle and mashed into place. As the quiver dries, it willtake this shape. The nice thing. about felting is that when the item is wet, it can be stretched or pushed into the desired shape. Lay the closed quiver on a dry towel with the pouch side up. Pull the pouch open and smooth it out so that it dries with no creases in it. Place in a warm place to dry. This may take 2-3 days. Check the inside toe to make sure the quiver is COMPLETELY DRY before putting wooden needles into it, or the needles may absorb some of the water.

FINISHING

When the quiver is dry, cut a strip of V2" wide Velcro 9" long. Only the rough side of the Velcro is needed because it will stick perectly to the felted yarn. Pin the strip of Velcro to the inside of the quiver Flap opening, approximately 14" in from the edge. Using matching thread, sew the Velcro in place by machine or hand. (Note: If sewing is not an option, the Velcro may be glued in place using a super glue intended for fabric. However, the glue may not last. Check the quiver regularly to make sure the Velcro is not coming loose, and reapply glue if necessary.) Slip the two D-rings onto the strap tab and fold tab over. Using a tapestry needle threaded with yarn Color A, sew the loose end of the tab to the quiver, just above where the tab is attached to quiver. Make sure to sew all the way through the felted fabric to secure the tab. Weave the ends of the sewing yarn through the inside of the felted fabric. To hook up strap, pull the loose end of the strap through both D-rings, then fold upward and pull through just the back D-ring. The strap willfit snug and not slip. TA-DAH! The quiver is done. Tuck needles inside, making sure the points of the needles are down in the cuff of the quiver. Pull the flap closed snugly. It should be tight enough. that needles will not fall out when the quiver is turned upside down. The outside pouch is intended to hold a small ball of working yarn. The quiver fits nicely over the shoulder, hugging the back, and may be worn while either sitting or walking and kniting.
