Ardrum Scarf/Wrap Knitting Pattern by Aisling M Doonan - Unique Handmade Design with Wavy Grass and Posies

Welcome to my very first scarf design. I wanted to make something unique for a friend's birthday present and so the Ardrum scarf was born, named after where she lives. I do hope she likes it! The scarfis knit in one piece with a border knitted on at the same time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed designing and making it. It would also make a very pretty stole or wrap by varying the number of repeats.

What you will need:

750m cobweb weight yarn approx (I used Heirloom Knitting's Merino 2 ply lace, shade Holly Green (375m per 25g), although this scarf could be knit in any weight wool to any size by amending the amount of repeats. My scarf weighs 4g and used 660m approx. 2.5mm straight needles (or short circulars if you prefer) Stitch markers or contrasting thread to mark the edging and centre design scarf sections. Row Counter (optional) Sharp scissors Darning needle (to darn in ends) Contrasting yarn for waste wool cast on.

Gauge/Tension: Gauge/Tenslon:

measures 2" x 2" (5 x 5cm) in garter stitch. 16 stitches at widest point and 16 rows in garter stitch. ensions using yarn/needle combination above and 7 repeats of the wavy grass and posy desig1 16" x 56" approx

Notes:

This scarf/wrap is knit from the bottom up in one piece. The edging is knit at the same time as the centre pattern of the scarf and the bottom edging is knit first (after using the waste wool cast on with some contrasting yarn). The stitches for the centre are picked up along the straight side of the edging,the waste wool is picked out and the live stches are placed on the needle so that the border can be knit on both sides as you knithe centre of the scarf, points facing outwards. This minimises casting on/ff and sewing which is something that appeals to me! )u can knit the scarf in stocking stitch but this may change the size and look of the completed item.

Patterning is on EVERY OTHER row.

To make this scarf/wrap wider, you can cast on any multiple of 30 centre stitches plus 6 lefthand side stitches and 7 right hand stitches (This does not include the stitches for the edging - as this varies from row to row.). Altemativly, you could make i thinnerby just using one repea of the centre 30 stitches.You will need to make some gauge/tension swatches to figure our how much more yarn you will need before beginning if this is the case. The length can also be changed by knitting the centre wavy grass and posy repeat more or less than the 7 times stated. very odd row is read from right to left and every even row is garter stitch and not shown on the ch.

Instructions:

Edging - Chart A: Wavy Blossom Edging

Cast on 12 stitches with your contrasting yarn and knit 3 rows. Break off contrasting yarn; join main yarn Without securing. The contrasting yarn will be removed and the stitches left picked up and used for the right hand edging of the scarf). Knit 1 row. Beginning with row 1ofedging chart nit 12points of edging (each point is a16 row repeat) note if you have mended thewidth of your scarf you will need to make either more or less edging points at this stage. I came up with the 12 points as follows:- Each point has 16 rows which leaves 8 ridges (loops between rows) to pick up stitches from " I wanted the edging to fit around the corners, so for the first and last 3 points I doubled up the edging and only picked up 4 stitches. 1 When the scarf is blocked this will mean that the edging sits neatly around the corners of your scarf so that it doesn't pull or pucker. So for the first three points I picked up 4 stitches, for the next 6 I picked up 8 stitches and then the final three I picked up 4 stitches per point, this left me with 4 +4 + 4 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 72 stitches. I need 73 stitches for the centre pattern, so I picked up an extra stitch to bring me up to 73. With the 12 edging stitches still on the right hand needle, pick up stitches as outlined above. Then pick up the 12 stitches attached to the contrasting yarn of your waste wool cast on. You can unpick or snip out the waste wool carefully with a scissors once the 12 stitches are safely on your needle. If you pull the waste wool taut, you should be able to see the stitches of your main yarn clearly. Unfortunately the chart is large and will not fit comfortably onto a page so you will need to stick the right and left hand sides together. The pages are laid out so that the left hand side is first, rows 527 down to 1 and then the right hand side rows 527 to 1. The pattern shows the edging alongside the main centre patterm on each side. The centre pattern is made up of 6 left hand centre side stitches, 30 centre pattern stitches (you can make the scarf into a wrap by increasing here, 60, 90, 120 etc.), 7 right hand centre side stitches and right hand edging stitches. The blue outline is the 30 centre pattern and the red outline is the scarf repeat (to be repeated 7 times). Follow the chart rows 1 - 528 Rows 1 - 10 - Garter stitch Rows 11 - 28 - Posies Rows 29 - 32 - Garter stitch Rows 33 - 58 - Wavy blooms Rows 59 - 62 - Garter stitch Rows 63 - 80 - Posies Rows 81 - 84 - Garter stitch Rows 85 - 96 - Wavy Grass and Posies Beginning Rows 97 - 144 - Wavy Grass and Posies Repeat (Repeat these 48 rows 7 times) You can make the scarf/wrap longer/shorter here Rows 43 - 46 - Wavy Grass and Posies Ending Rows 447 - 450 - Garter Stitch Rows 451 - 468 - Posies Rows 469 - 472 - Garter Stitch Rows 473 - 498 - Wavy Blooms Rows 499 - 502 - Garter Stitch Rows 503 - 520 - Posies Rows 521 - 528 - Garter Stitch The stitches outined in blue are the 30-stitch pattern repeat. The red outline is the centre Wavy Grass and Posies Repeat (that needs to be repeated 7 times). On the very last row decrease stitch count by 1 (to get the 72 stitches needed to attach the edging to) DO NO CAST OFF. You should have finished the final row of the scarf with a row 16 of the edging. Now you need to complete twelve more points of the edging for the top of the scarf attaching it to the scarf body as you go by knitting 2 stitches (last edging stitch and next scarf stitchon the lft hand needle together. With the wrong side facing use the right hand edging and continue knitting attaching to the body of the scarf/wrap (on the left hand needle) as follows:- c the corners at the beginning ofthe scarf, continue with the edging pattern as charted (the repeat is outlined in red) and attach to the scarf body as follows:- ·For the first 3 points attach the edging to the scarf body every 4th row For the next 6 points attach the edging to the scarf body every 2nd row For the final 3 points attach the edging to the scarf body every 4th row There is no need to cast off. When the 12 point is complete, you can graft Kitchener stitch) the two ends of the edging together for an invisible join. I have no helpful graphics for this, if you make socks, or Shetland shawls you will already be familiar with the process of grafting. If in doubt, please root out your knitting books or look it ul online. It's much easier to grasp if you can see it being done in a tutorial or with pictures. Alternatively, you can cast off and sew two edges neatly together. I personally prefer to keep all stitches on the needle until the entire seam is grafted (just in case) but there is no real need to do this! Darn in all loose ends securely and block/dress.

Dressing/Blocking

I blocked my scarf ona double bd with blocking wire and safety pins, but allyou really need is alarge enough lat spacemeasuring tape,rustproof pins and tim!Sak the scarf in lukewarm water with some gentle detergent suitable for your yarn. If using wool, don't alter the temperature of the water as this could cause felting. Rinse until all the detergent is rinsed out, wrap in a colourfast towel, and blot to take out most of the moisture. Lay out on your chosen flat suface and pin out, stretching gently, along each point of the edging. You can use the tape measure to make sure each side is straight. Leave until completely dry.
