Deduction Game Chullo: A Sherlock-Inspired Knitting Pattern for a Unique Warm Hat

Pattern illustration

Deduction Game Chullo by Professor Fonz

Sherlock is back! Let's play deductions! This warm chullo hat inspired by The Empty Hearse is made of New Zealand sheep wool (rather than Icelandic sheep wool or alpaca yarn, as Sherlock would doubtlessly deduce in seconds, what with his extensive knowledge of natural fibers and their varying tensile strengths), and it comes blissfully free of halitosis! You might want to knit one for yourself (or for your pet goldfish). But really, why would anyone want a hat like that? Anyone who wears a hat as stupid as this isn't in the habit of hanging around other people, is he? Or maybe he just doesn't mind being different, who knows? Anyhow, here is the pattern: Materials: worsted weight wool (I used Ashford Tekapo', 100% pure NZ wool) - 1 skein (100 g) cream, 0.5 skein black, 0.5 skein grey. Set of 4 dpns and a 40 cm circular needle in size 4.5 mm Gauge: 17-18 sts = 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Size: One size fits most (M/L or 55-60 cm circumference) - adjust size by changing gauge/needle size. Special abbreviations: Kfb - knit into the front and into the back of st to increase 1 st; K2tog -- knit two sts together. The ear flaps are knitted flat and then joined to the body of the hat. The hat is then knitted entirely in the round.

Ear flaps (make 2)

With cream and 2 dpns, CO 4 sts Row 1 -- K all sts Row 2 - P all sts Row 3 - Kfb, k until 2 last sts, Kfb, K Row 4 - P all sts Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you have 22 sts on the needle P 1 row. Cut yarn. Leave live sts on the needle

Hat

With cream and the circular needle, CO 10 sts using the backwards loop method, K the 22 sts from the first ear flap, CO 24 sts using the backwards loop method, K the 22 sts from the second ear flap, CO 10 sts using the backwards loop method = 88 sts. Join in the round, making sure not to twist sts. Round 1: P10, K22, P24, K22, P10. Place marker for beginning of rd. Next 10 rds: K all sts in cream Next 4 rds: K all sts in black Next 2 rds: K all sts in grey Next 8 rds: K all sts in black Next 2 rds: K all sts in grey Next 4 rds: K all sts in black Next 4 rds: K all sts in cream Begin crown decreases as follows (continue in cream): Next rd: (K6, K2tog) 11 times = 77 sts Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K5, K2tog) 11 times = 66 sts Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K4, K2tog) 11 times = 55 sts Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K3, K2tog) 11 times = 44 sts Change to dpns Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K2, K2tog) 11 times = 33 sts Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K1, K2tog) 11 times = 22 sts Next rd: K all sts Next rd: (K2tog) 11 times = 11 sts Cut the yarn, thread through live sts and pull tightly. Weave in all ends. Block to measurements. If you find the ear flaps curling, you might want to sew a line of crab stitch (or else crochet) around the edge of the hat. Mine was surprisingly non-curly for some reason. Anyhow, to finish: Braid 2 15 cm lengths of cord using 3 triple yarn strands for each, attach to the ear flaps. Make 3 pom poms around 7 cm in diameter, using mostly the cream wool, with some grey and black mixed in. Attach to top of the hat and to the ends of the braids. Place on your head gingerly and tease your older brother about being lonely.
