# SHOULDER RUFFLE

Recommended for beginner knitters This garment is one size fits most. You may add or deduct stitches as required to adjust circuference. Ya amounts may vary.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Neckline circumference (approx): 112cm/ 44ins Hemline circumference (approx): 305cm/ 120ins Depth: $20\mathrm{cm}/$ 8ins

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

When choosing yarn and needles or crochet hooks for your project, always knit a large test swatch (or several). This will allow you to check tension, as well as preview finished fabric. Adjust needle (hook) sizes to obtain the tension quoted in the instructions. To achieve fewer stitches per cm/inch, use a larger needle (hook). To achieve more stitches per cm/inch, use a smaller needle (hook). Thin yarns may be successfully worked together as one to achieve the effect of a thicker yarn. Wash and /or block swatches to avoid any unwanted surprises. Remember, a small difference in tension can result in large differences in measurements of finished garment. All measurements given are approximate and are rounded off to the nearest . $5\mathrm{cm}/\,^{1}\!/_{4}$ ins.

MATERIALS

Approx $420\mathrm{m}/$ 469yds of a lace weight "hairy" yarn. YARN CATEGORY $:\oplus$ superfine weight Shown in kid mohair/ silk mix, but also suitable for any fibre of choice, provided the tension is correct. Circular needle $12\mathrm{mm}$ US 17, $80\mathrm{cm}/$ 32ins long, OR size required to achieve correct tension. This garment is worked back and forth on a circular needle for ease in accommodating a large amount of stitches. A pair of straight needles may be used if preferred. A crochet hook, medium size, approx: $3.5{-}4.5\mathrm{mm}$ US 4-7. Waste yarn (smooth contrast yarn) approx $130\mathrm{cm}/50$ ins long. Elastic thread, one spool.

TENSION

9 sts and $9\ \mathrm{rows}=10\mathrm{cm/}$ 4ins over garter stitch, using larger needles. Note: this is a loose and flexible tension. Measure on a flat surface, slightly stretched. GARTER STITCH Knit every row.

RUFFLE

Loosely cast on 270 sts. Do not join, but work back and forth in garter st until piece from beg measures: $40.5\mathrm{cm}/$ 16ins. Cast off loosely.

FINISHING

Fold piece in half lengthwise and weave waste yarn through stitches along fold line ( $20\mathrm{cm}/$ 8ins from cast on edge). Pull waste yarn from both ends to create gathers, until folded edge measures: $112\mathrm{cm}/44\mathrm{ins}$ . Temporarily secure waste yarn at ends to hold gathered length. With crochet hook and elastic thread, work a row of slip stitch along fold line, through each stitch of one row. Cut and fasten off elastic thread. Remove waste yarn. Unfold length and sew the side edges together to form a ring. Garment can be worn on top of shoulders as shown , or behind neck and back with arms through loop.
