Pattern
This pattern is knit in two separate pieces, which are joined together at the finishing stage. This allows for a symmetrical lace pattern (pattern is worked from edges towards centre of the shawl), while the join between the leaf pattern and open lace panel hides the seam to the point of near invisibility. See end of pattern for tips on modifications.

Cast on
Cast on 189 sts. Knit 1 row. First 3 sts and last 3 sts form the garter stitch borders - these stitches are always knit, all charts are worked between these 3+3 stitches.
Charts
See next page for all charts and construction diagram. Note: WS rows are not charted. On WS, work garter stitch edges in garter stitch, for rest of the pattern, knit the knits, purl the purls and yarn overs. Leaves are charted (Charts A and B). Section C is a reverse stockinette stitch background that starts off as 7 sts wide between each chart, and narrows by 1 st at the beginning of each subsequent repeat, until 2 sts remain between leaf charts. Work charts in the following order: Garter tab, BRight, C, \*A, C, B, C\*, repeat \*\* until 17 sts remain, A, C, B-Left, Garter tab. Keep working according to charts, until a total of six vertical repeats have been completed (two purl stitches between each chart), end with last RS row of charts. Knit 7 rows, on last row evenly decrease 4 sts. 115 sts remain on needles. For Leaf panel #1, place stitches on holder. Work instructions from “Cast on" for a second time to knit Leaf panel #2. For Leaf panel #2, continue to Lace panel section below.
Lace panel
Work chart D until lace panel reaches desired length. Remember 3 sts garter stitch border at each side! Shawl on photo has a total of ten vertical repeats of chart D. End with RS row of chart.
Finishing
Join pieces together in the way of your preference. Recommended method is to use Kitchener stitch to seam the pieces together. Alternative methods include three-needle-bind-off, and simply binding off each piece separately, and sewing the two together. Block shawl into desired shape and dimensions.

Note: WS rows are not charted On WS, purl all sts.

Pointers for modifications
Width of shawl
To alter the width of the shawl, alter the number of cast-on stitches by multiples of (2xc + a + b ) sts, where c = number of initial sts in section C, a = number of sts in Chart A row 1, and b = number of sts in Chart B row 1. My values for these are: c = 7, a = 1, b = 11, so, to alter the width of the shawl if you made no other modification, you'll need to add or deduct multiples of 26 sts from the cast-on number of 189 sts. You may need to adjust your stitch count for lace panel.
Length of Leaf Panel
There are a few ways this can be done, entirely up to your preference.
1. Extrapolate based on current design
This involves working backwards from the cast-on point: casting on a stitch count where section C would be “purl 8 sts", “purl 12 sts" or even wider. To do this, you'll need to work out a new cast-on count. There are a total of 14 sections C running between various Chart As and Chart Bs in the pattern as originally designed. So, for each vertical repeat of A or B you wish to add, you'll need to add one stitch to each of those 14 Cs. So, for each vertical repeat, add 14 sts to cast on count, and purl more stitches between Charts A and B. You can also get two additional vertical repeats by continuing as before, until you have no stitches left between A and B. Note that this will result in a narrower lace panel than in pattern as designed. Adjust stitch count for lace panel. You can use a similar method to shorten the leaf panel, by either substracting a multiple of 14 sts from cast-on count (and working less stitches between charts A and B), or omitting some of the last vertical repeats of charts A and B (note that this will result in a wider lace panel than in pattern as designed). Adjust stitch count for lace panel.
2. Work repeats straight
Cast on as in pattern, but keep working vertical repeats of pattern without decreasing the purl stitches between charts A and B. Resume with decreases after desired number of repeats has been added to length.
3. Skip decreases on some repeats
Skipping decreases on some of the vertical repeats will maintain the shape of the shawl while adding additional repeats along the way. Simply work additional repeats without decreasing, for a longer leaf panel.
Calculating stitch count for lace panel
If you have made modifications to the pattern, your stitch count will likely need to be adjusted for Chart D on lace panel. This is done in the pattern on the seventh row of garter stitch between the leaf panel and the lace panel, by either increasing or (preferably) decreasing stitches to match the requirement for the lace panel. The stitch count required for the lace panel is: 3 sts garter stitch tab + 7 sts chart edges + (x x 6 sts chart repeat) + 3 sts garter stitch tab, which translates to multiples of 6 sts + 13 sts. So, to figure out how many stitches you need to decrease before lace panel, take the number of stitches you have on your needles, deduct 13 from that (garter stitch borders and chart edges), and you'll have the number of stitches that is meant for pure chart repeats. Is that number divisible by six? If it is, you're in luck and no adjustments need to be done. If it's not, find the nearest (smaller) number that is divisible by six, figure out the difference between these two numbers, and decrease that many stitches on your last round of garter stitch. For example, in the pattern as designed, you'll have 119 sts left after leaf panel. Deduct 13 from that: 106 sts. 106 is not divisible by 6, but 102 is, so I needed to decrease the stitch count by 106-102=4 sts to make it work for the lace panel.
