Elaina's Slouchy Hat

Size Chart:
Size 1: 0-6 months; 16 inches Size 2: 6-12 months; 17 inches Size 3: 1-2 years; 18 inches Size 4: 3-8 years; 19 inches Size 5: 8 years-small adult; 20 inches Size 6: large adult; 21 inches The sizes will be written in the pattern as follows: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Supplies:
Size G (4.0 MM) crochet hook Size J (6.0 MM) crochet hook Approximately 100 grams worsted weight yarn; 100 (150, 150, 200, 250, 250) yards Tapestryneedle Gauge: 8 stitches and 10 rows = 2 inches in single crochet
Notes:
In this pattern, the ch2 at the beginning of the round does not count as a stitch. The crochet stitches are worked under both top threads. You may find crochet instructions on the internet. I only provide the stitch abbreviations for you. I do provide instructions for the special X pattern.
Abbreviations:
Chain (ch), Slip Stitch (sl st), Single Crochet (sc), Double Crochet (dc), stitch (st), stitches (sts), Front Post Double Treble Crochet (fpdtc) & Half Double Crochet (hdc).
Special Stitch Instructions:
FPDTC-to do the front post double treble crochet, yo 3 times, insert hook from front to back around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a loop, and complete double treble crochet. Detailed pictures are provided when this stitch is introduced into the pattern.
Pattern:
\*\*\*Use size J (6.0 MM) crochet hook\*\*\*
Foundation: ch4, join with sl st in first st to make a ring. Round 1: ch2, 6 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) hdc in ring, join to ch2 space with a sl st. {6 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) stitches} Round 2: ch1, 2 sc in each stitch around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) stitches} Round 3: ch1, \*skip one st, (sc, and dc in next st). Repeat from \* around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) stitches} Round 4: ch1, 2 sc in each stitch around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {24 (28, 32, 36, 40, 44) stitches} Round 5: ch1, \*skip one st, (sc, and dc in next st). Repeat from \* around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {24 (28, 32, 36, 40, 44) stitches} Round 6: ch1, 2 sc in each stitch around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {48 (56, 64, 72, 80, 88) stitches} Round 7: ch1, \*skip one st, (sc, and dc in next st). Repeat from \* around. Join to ch1 space with a sl st. {48 (56, 64, 72, 80, 88) stitches} \*Repeat round 7 for 6 (8, 10, 12, 14, 15) more rounds \*\*\*\*I have found that everyone has a different definition of "slouchy." If you find the hat isn't as slouchy as you want it to be, all you have to do is add a couple of rounds after Round 7, and it will add length and slouchiness.\*\*\*\*\*\*
\*\*\*Switch to size G (4.0 MM) crochet hook\*\*\*
Round 1-4: ch 1, sc around, join with sl st at end. {48 (56, 64, 72, 80, 88) stitches} Round 5: ch1, \*sc in the next 3 sts, fpdtc in 4" stitch to the left and 4"h row down, sc in the next 4 sts, fpdtc in the 4" stitch to the right and 4" row down.
