Terminology:

Newborn size in worsted weight acrylic yarn
Instructions:
Hat is worked from brim to top, knit in the round, switch to dpk when not enough st remain to use circulars. Cast on 42 (48, 54, 60, 66, 72) st in orange, join to form round, place stitch marker at beginning of round Stockinette stitch for 4 rows (on circular needles knit every row) K7 (8,9,10,11,12), m1 in last knitted stitch, around to beg of round 48 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78) st K7 (8,9,10,11,12), P1 repeat to end of round, work in this pattern until hat measures 4 (5, 6, 6.5, 7, 9) inches total (with brim rolled) Deerease: \*ssk, knit 3 (4, 5, 6, 7, 8), k2tog, p1\* repeat around to beginning [36 (42,48, 54, 60, 66) st] next 2 rounds in pattern, knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitch \*ssk, knit 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), k2tog, p1\* around to beginning [24 (30, 36, 42,48, 54) st] Work next round in pattern Go to size for finishing:

Optional tendril:
With a G crochet hook chain 30. Work 2 single crochet in each space until end Cut yarn and finish off leaving a long tail to tie to top of hat.
Hat Sizing:
First Hat length should be followed to make a hat with a fold up brim. The second height should be used for making skull caps and hats with ear flaps. The diameter measure is how big across your circle should be when making increase rows for each size, when size is reached go to working every stitch (no increases) until hat length is achieved.
