Directions:
Using size 7 needle and CC, cast on 54 (63, 72, 81, 90) stitches. Join work into the round, being careful not to twist stitches, and place a marker. Beginning with a knit round, work in garter stitch for 1 (1, 1, 1, 1.5)". Cut CC, attach MC and increase as follows: $\mathbf{\mu\times}\mathbb{M}\mathbf{1}$ ?$\mathtt{k9^{*}}$ repeatbetween $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round. 60 (70, 80, 90, 100) stitches result. Begin working in the following rib pattern: All rounds: $\ast\mathbf{1}\mathbf{\tau}^{\mathbf{\forall}}\mathbf{x}\mathbf{7}$ ,$\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round. Continue in rib pattern until piece measures 4.75 (5.25, 5.75, 6, 6.5)" and begin decreases as follows, switching to DPN's when necessary for comfort: Round 1: \*ssk, $\mathtt{k5}$ ?$\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between \* \* to the end of the round 54 (63, 72, 81, 90) sts rem Round 2: $\ast\mathtt{k}6$ ,$\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round Round 3: $\bf{\ast}\mathtt{k}\mathtt{q}$ ,k2tog, $\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round 48 (56, 64, 72, 80) sts rem Round 4: $\ast\mathtt{k}\mathtt{s}$ $\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round Round 5: \*ssk, $\mathtt{k3}$ $\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round 42 (49, 56, 63, 70) sts rem Round 6: $\bf{\ast}\mathtt{k}\mathtt{q}$ ,$\mathtt{p}3^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round Round 7: $\bf{\ast}\mathtt{k}\mathtt{q}$ ,p2tog, $\mathbf{p}1^{*}$ repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round 36 (42, 48, 54, 60) sts rem Round 8: $\ast\mathtt{k}\mathtt{Z}$ ,k2tog, $\mathtt{p z^{*}}$ repeat between \* \* to the end of the round 30 (35, 40, 45, 50)sts rem Round 9: Cut MC, attach CC and work 1 round knit (ribbing ends at this point) Round 10: $\ast\mathtt{k}3$ , k2tog\* repeat between \* \* to the end of the round 24 (28, 32, 36. 40) stitchesremain Round 1l: knit Round 12: $\ast\mathtt{k}\mathtt{Z}$ , k2tog\* repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round 18 (21, 24, 27, 30) stitches remain Round 13: $\bf{*}\bf{k}\bf{1}$ , k2tog\* repeat between \* \* to the end of the round 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) stitchesremain Round 14: \*k2tog\* repeat between $\ast\ast$ to the end of the round 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) stitches remain. Continue to decrease evenly to 4 stitches (keep knitting 2 stitches together until 4 stitches remain) and work a 4-stitch I-cord using two of the DPN's for 2 (2, 2, 2.5, 3)"and bind off.
Tendrils:
Using size 8 needles, cast on 12 stitches. Knit into the front, back, and front again of each stitch on the needle. 36 stitches. Bind off purlwise on the next row. The piece will be very curly. Cut the tail, but remember to leave it long enough to use it to stitch the tendril onto the hat. Repeat the tendril pattern for the second tendril, using 24 stitches instead of 12. Your increase row will yield 72 stitches. Stitch the tendrils onto the hat, near the base of the I-cord for a natural pumpkin effect. Weave in all ends and block to measurements.
A friendly reminder:
Garter stitch in the round is worked $\ast_{1}$ round knit, 1 round purl\* repeat \* \*
