Hearts for My Tween
by Rebecca Reveal and Ansku A spunky mitten using i-cord cast on, Estonian braid, a gored thumb, and utilizing Ansku's heart charts (with permission) for a reversible mitten. See Ansku's Heart mittens for the original inspiration for this mitten palmikoita.vuodatus.net/page/heartmittens . Of course you don't have to do the i-cord CO or Estonian braid and could simply substitute CO in the heart color and a row of purl for contrast between the cuff and the hand of the mittens or a crocheted braid later on. Knitting is all about having fun withyourcreation! I-cord CO: Longtail CO 3 st in heart color. Slide 3 stitches back onto left needle. Knit front and back into the first st, k2, slide 3 st back to the left hand needle with yarn in back. Continue until there are two more stiches than needed (50 in this case) then k2tog, k1, slip two st back to left needle and k2tog. The i-cord is not joined to itself to allow enough ease when slipping on the mitten. Note: the first row after the i-cord CO may be loose, but can be tightened by knitting into the back loop. Change to background color and prepare to knit in the round. K1P1 ribbing in size 2 needles for 14 rows carrying background color and sequin strand as desired. Knit and purl tbl on first row to tighten i-cord CO. Estonian braid in heart color on size 4 needles. In heart color, make one, slip st back to left needle. Bring right needle behind first st, k second st through back loop without dropping the sts off of the left needle, k first st on left needle, drop both sts off left needle, sl 1 st back to left needle. Rep around, when all sts have been worked, switch first stitch of round with last stitch. You will use the extra stitch as the begining of the thumb gore, making stitches to the right and left that will be partially hidden behind the braid. Hand: Knit the main part of the mitten on size 4 needles or those needles you choose for your gauge following hand and thumb gore charts. Repeat hand chart to make both the front and back of the mitten. In first row of chart increase 2 stitches in addition to those in the thumb gore (placement suggested). At top of thumb gore, slip the thumb stitches to waste yarn and join in the round to complete the rest of the hand chart. Tip: Break off 5-6 times the length of the top live stitches and graft (kitchener stitch) the top of the mitten. Thumb: Put the thumb stitches back on the size 4 needles, pick up a stitch on the hand side of the mitten. Leave 5-6" tail of background colored yarn to fix the holes from joining for the thumb (or pick up 3 stitches on hand side and decrease down to one in the next row to eliminate holes). Follow thumb chart directly above thumb gore chart. Finish the thumb by breaking off 4-5 " of yarn, thread end through remaining stitches, pull tight, and weave in. Weave in ends and block as desired. oyright Rebecca Reveal 2011 -this pattern is for personal use only. All rights reserved.
