Newborn Hats

Designed by Paula Herbert These are some hats I have been knitting for newborns for the Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign by the American Heart Association for the month of February. I can knit 3 hats from a 200 yard skein of worsted weight of Kraemer's Perfection Worsted and two hats from a 120 yard skein of Perfection Chunky. In the pattern, the first number is for worsted weight and the second number in parentheses is for chunky. These newborn hats are about 5 1/2 - 6 inches deep with a 13-14 inch circumference. You can go as small as 3 1/2-4 inch deep and 9-10 inch circumference for a premature baby.

All Hats:

With size 8 (10) needle, cast on 60 (48) stitches. Place marker, join in the round careful not to twist. Ribbed Hat: Knit 3, purl 3 for four inches. Round 1: \*Knit 3, purl 2 together, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Rounds 2 and 3: \* Knit 3, purl 2. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 4: \*Knit 3, purl 2 together. Repeat from \* to end of round. Switch to double pointed needles. Round 5: \*Knit 3, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 6: \*Knit 2 together, knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 7: \*Knit 2, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 8: \*Knit 2 together, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 9: \*Knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from \* to end of round. Round 10 and 11: \*Knit 2 together. Repeat from \* until four stitches remain. Use these four stitches to make an 4-inch i-cord. Tie the cord in a knot! (To make i-cord, slide the stitches to the front of the needle, pull the yarn across the back, and knit the four stitches. Slide the stitches back to the front of the needle, pull the yarn across the back, knit the four stitches, repeat until the i-cord is the desired length, then bind off stitches.)

Tasseled Hat:

Knit 6 rows, purl 2 rows. Knit for 4 inches. Turn hat inside out, divide stitches into two [24 (30) on each side of the circular needle] and do a 3-needle bind off. Cut yarn and weave in the end. To make tassels, cut 12 six-inch pieces of yarn. Using a large crochet hook, pull the middle of the group of tassels through the corner of the hat forming a loop, then pull the ends of the tassels through the loop and tighten. Do the same on the other corner.
