Cozy Up Your Coffee Pot: A Striped Waistcoat-Inspired Cosy Pattern for 8-Cup Jugs

Pattern illustration

This design is based on a waistcoat coffee cosy I have had for years. It is basically a rectangle with v-neck, for accommodating the lip of the coffee jug, and two buttons at the back to fasten. The ones in front are decorative. Size To fit an 8 cup Boden or similar coffee pot. Yarn I used some leftovers of Debbie Bliss Merino Chunky in four colours. You will need about $150~\mathfrak{m}$ Needles 6mm straight needles 6.5mm straight needles Notions Two buttons for fastening, and three for decoration on the front. Gauge $14\,s\dagger=10c m$ in stocking stitch. Instructions Using 6mm needles CO 48 stitches in colour chosen for rib border. Rib (K2P2) four rows. Change to 6.5mm needles and change colour. Knit in stocking stitch for a further 12cm. To stop the work from curling always knit first and last two stitches in each row. Alternate colours for stripy effect. I used a total of four colours. Buttonholes Where you place these may depend on the design of your jug. I made two holes 3cm and 10cm from start of stocking stitch. I like the buttonhole method in Elizabeth Zimmerman's 'Knitting without Tears' Working the V-neck Next row K 22 st K2tog and turn. Leave remaining stitches on spare needle. Continue a further 6 rows, decreasing one stitch every row at neck edge. 17 stitches. Keep stitches on spare needle while complete the V-neck for remaining 24 stitches. Neck border Change to 6mm needles and border colour. K 2 P 15 from left hand side of cosy. Pick up knit 8 st down each side of V. Then P 15 K 2 from right hand side needle. (26 st) Continue in K2 P2 rib for a further three rows, increasing one stitch each row at to of V while decreasing one stitch at V. CO loosely in rib.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Sew on buttons to match buttonholes, then add three decorative buttons down the front. Enjoy hot coffee!
